'1923' Season 2 Episode 3 "Wrap Thee in Terror" Review

Writer: Je-ReeJe-Ree

Welcome to America.

This episode of 1923 brilliantly details the journey that immigrants coming to Ellis Island had to endure to gain an approval to enter America. Alexandra, driven by her desire to be with Spencer (I do not blame you girl) has made the trip to America alone and is met with folded arms.

Even as a white, blonde beautiful woman because she is an immigrant she is treated with disdain. How does the first man she meets giving her a quick exam punch he in the stomach because she got smart with him. The examining physician basically told her that America does not want her. She is forced to strip down fully and giving an invasive exam by some strange man she just met. There is a nurse in the room but that does not make it any easier. The doctor does find out she is pregnant and to make matters even worse, she must do the same exam again with two other doctors.

After she completes the exam, she is harassed by another woman who suggest she offers herself up to get approved. When her name is finally called, and she meets the man that holds her fate in his hands he calls her a liar when she explains she is meeting her husband. He tests her ability to read, and Alexandra masterfully reads him for filth. She recites the words from the famous song we learn “give us your tired, your poor” and tells lets him know she no longer cares what he does but he should change his shirt, so his wife doesn’t see the lipstick. She gets the stamp of approval and is allowed to enter the city.

New York City is not a nice place for a woman traveling on her own and a newsstand man gives her advice about hiding her money. When she gets to the train station, the man at the window also tries to help her. There is a glimmer of hope that all she must do is get on the train and head to Montana, but this is 1923 and we see a man follow her into the bathroom. We must wait until the next episode to learn her fate.

Meanwhile Spencer is not having the best time either. He runs into trouble on the road with Luca while trying to smuggle liquor and Luca is killed. I was very much hoping it would go smoothly because I do not believe Luca’s cousin will let this go. He will definitely come looking for Spencer.

The female Marshall we met is on the trail of Father Renaud and I for one hopes she kills them for what they did to that Native American family.

Jacob and the crew make it back home finally and Elizabeth tells Jack she is going home. Is it just me or is she overreacting. Does she want to have rabies? I am very confused there. The worst is far from over as Zane has a brain bleed and the doctor (I know he is ready to go home by the way) has to drain it with no anesthesia. Is there no rest?

Another great episode of 1923 that brought the drama and emotion and has us biting our nails until the next episode!
