Emilia Pérez leads this year's Oscar nominations with a record-breaking 13 nominations, followed by The Brutalist and Wicked, which each received 10 nominations. The list of nominees for the 2025 Academy Awards was announced on Thursday morning.
Emilia Pérez made history as the first non-English-language film to receive 13 nominations, surpassing the previous record-holders Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Roma, which both earned 10 nominations. Close behind were The Brutalist and Wicked, both securing 10 nominations each. A Complete Unknown and Conclave earned 8 nominations each.
In terms of studio representation, Netflix leads with 16 nominations, followed by A24 with 14, Universal with 13, Focus Features with 12, and Searchlight with 10.
The nominations were announced live by Rachel Sennott and Bowen Yang at 5:30 a.m. PT from the Film Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater. The duo, known for their roles on Saturday Night Live and Wicked, revealed the nominees across 23 categories, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Adapted and Original Screenplay, Documentary, Animated Feature, Original Song, Music Score, Costume Design, Makeup and Hairstyling, Cinematography, Editing, Visual Effects, and Production Design.
Originally set for January 17, the nominations were delayed twice due to the Los Angeles wildfires, which have caused widespread devastation, leaving at least 28 people dead, destroying more than 14,000 buildings, and burning nearly 40,000 acres. The Academy extended the voting window twice, with a final announcement date set for January 23.
In response to the disaster, the Academy donated $1 million to the Motion Picture & Television Fund’s wildfire relief efforts, including $250,000 that would have been spent on the Oscars Nominees Luncheon, which has now been canceled. Despite the ongoing crisis, the Academy intends to move forward with the 2025 Oscars, with the ceremony also set to honor Los Angeles.
The 97th Academy Awards, hosted by Conan O’Brien, will air live on ABC and Hulu on Sunday, March 2, from the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood, beginning at 4 p.m. PT / 7 p.m. ET. The earlier start time, introduced last year, will be maintained.
