We start the episode off with the teachers watching the news, hoping for the end of the SEPTA strike (with the exception of Mr. Johnson who is enjoying having no kids to pick trash up after).
Then the teachers are invited by Mr. Nathaniel (the representative for the golf course that Abbott was blackmailing) to the golf-course’s pre grand opening as a thank you/apology/a bribe.
The teachers go to the golf course with the kids, and Janine is very skeptical, and is trying very hard to hate the golf course, but she is very impressed along with everyone else. But then it is eventually revealed that they only invited Abbott and the kids to use them for good press to seem diverse (I’m not gonna lie, it was kind of satisfying seeing all of the white people being pushed to the back for the group picturelol). Jacob is conflicted however because RJ (the kid from his class that hasn’t shown an interest in anything) has seemingly found something he likes: golf. RJ is finally showing excitement, but golf is a very expensive hobby, so Jacob is now trying to figure out how to solve this problem.
We have a rare Ava and Melissa bonding moment when they are trying to steal the white truffles that are being served. The teachers then come together and propose to Mr. Nathaniel a free golf program for the kids and after a little bit of back and forth, Mr. Nathaniel quickly agrees when Gregory threatens to eat all of the expensive white truffles. So in the end, RJ has finally found his groove, but that doesn’t negate all of the problems he has, and he isn’t the only student. I don’t know if they are setting up a new storyline for Jacob, but I do like this RJ storyline so even though it is seemingly absolved for now, I really want it to continue into his home life.
Meanwhile, Janine finally got a reservation at The Valet’s Daughter, but now Erika can't go and she has no one to go with. Barbara convinces Grergory to take her, but as we know, Gregory has the weirdest and most restricted taste in food, so this is going to be interesting. Barbara is trying to expose Gregory’s palate to more types of foods to prepare him for dinner. Barbara ends up tricking Greogry into eating truffles and he didn’t think he would like them, but he did, which gave him hope. We do get a little backstory into Gregory’s family, stating how he grew up with a military family who ate for efficiency, which actually makes sense when you consider how particular and plain his palate is. I can kind of relate when it comes to eating basic foods because that is only what was around when I grew up, but it is heartwarming to see him excited to like new things and try new things. It seems that he is letting the shackles of his childhood go.
So far, this episode seems to touch on many running storylines, such as the golf course and RJ, and even diving into Gregory’s palate. But even though this involved many storylines, this episode was very chill and calming. And I wonder if this is really the end of these storylines, or maybe it’s just the beginning…..
