'Abbott Elementary' Season 4 Episode 17 "Karaoke" Review

Writer: Je-ReeJe-Ree

We are back for another lesson in comedy with the staff at Abbott Elementary.

The episode opens with a work personality potluck that Janine put together. I've never heard of a personality potluck but I want to take part in one now. You have to guess who brought in what dish which of course Melissa quickly does. The potluck ends in a hug much to Janine's delight.

Barbara is hosting a karaoke night for the group and Ava cannot make it because she finally has a date with O'Shon. When we arrive at karaoke it is nothing but pure fun and comedy. Mr. Johnson apparently told Quincy Jones he sings he wants to sing (Mr. Johnson singing the Oscar winning "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp" took me out) and Jacob sees a guy he think he is cute. The problem is his ex-boyfriend Zack is there with his new boyfriend. Of course that sends Jacob into a tailspin but it was enough of a push to flirt with a new guy and and he got his number. So proud of Jacob, its time he got lucky in love.

One of the side stories is Simon and Erika showing up to karaoke and bringing their on again, off again drama. They hilariously sing off key but end up breaking up again before the episode is over and are crying at the karaoke bar. One line that stuck out is when Simon told Jacob everyone down at the district has the wrong idea about him. If you remember a few episodes ago Jacob asking for extra help at the school at the district meeting did not go over well. I feel like this will be touched on again down the line sometime.

We finally get to see O'Shon's game when he takes out Ava but she royally screws it up by making too many jokes when O'Shon tries to get to know her. It was really painful to watch and I just wanted Ava to stop showboating. When O'Shon decides to skip out on dessert and call Ava out she finally changes her tune. They join the gang at karaoke and I am rooting for them even though I know it won't last. Matthew Law (O'Shon) was just cast in a new Netflix project. I'm definitely going to enjoy every cute moment we get with them until then. Someimes Ava can come off insufferable for me but this episode did not give me that vibe.

Meanwhile Gregory has missed most of the night because he has been doing rideshare to make extra money. He was able to come in right at the end while Janine was ironically singing Always on Time by Ashanti and Ja Rule. It was a very cute scene.

I definitely want to see more of Janine and Gregory outside of the group and on romantic dates.

We end the episode with a group song and it just show cases how much chemistry this cast has together, even with the guest stars. Another solid episode of Abbott Elementary, no notes.
