Addressing Racism in the Star Wars Universe: The Acolyte's Jodie Turner-Smith Speaks Out Against Disney

In a recent turn of events within the Star Wars universe, Jodie Turner-Smith, known for her role in 'Star Wars: The Acolyte,' has taken a stand against Disney for what she perceives as lack of protection towards the cast and a failure to denounce racism. Turner-Smith, who portrayed Mother Aniseya in the Disney+ series, did not mince her words in expressing disappointment in the studio's handling of the situation, particularly in regard to her co-star, Stenberg.

Stenberg, lauded for the dedication and love they poured into their character, faced backlash from segments of Star Wars fans. Turner-Smith, in an interview with Glamour UK, commended Stenberg's commitment and expressed her dissatisfaction with Disney's apparent absence of support during the storms of online hate. "They’ve got to stop doing this thing where they don’t say anything when people are getting f*ing dog-piled on the internet with racism and bullsh*t ," she emphasized. "It’s just not fair to not say anything. It’s really unfair."

The British actress highlighted the importance of powerful entities like Disney using their influence to take a stand against racism. She stressed the need for unequivocal statements that condemn such behavior, urging a clear stance that asserts, "You’re not a fan if you do this." Turner-Smith underlined the potential impact of such actions by noting that people of color, particularly Black people, hold significant sway in the consumer market.

Stenberg, who faced what they described as "intolerable racism," expressed their feelings through a song, addressing the appropriation and distortion of the term 'woke.' This creative outlet served as a response to the discrimination they encountered in the wake of the announcement of 'The Acolyte,' even before the show had materialized. The onslaught of bigotry and vitriol faced by Stenberg was characterized by qualities of hyper-conservative ideology and prejudiced hatred.

In the aftermath of 'The Acolyte's' cancellation, Stenberg publicly confronted the flood of negativity they had endured, rallying against the wave of vitriol and bigotry directed at them solely based on prejudiced ideologies. This episode underscores the pervasive issue of racism that exists even within fan communities, shedding light on the importance of actively countering such toxic elements.

While Turner-Smith's critique is pointed towards Disney, the broader message resonates across all fan communities, including that of Star Wars. The call to action for companies to speak out against racism is a plea for integrity and moral responsibility in an era where such values carry significant weight. The portrayal of values within the Star Wars universe, encompassing themes of justice, equity, and diversity, finds itself tested in the real world, urging fans and stakeholders alike to uphold these principles beyond the realm of fiction.

As the Star Wars saga continues to captivate audiences with its tales of heroism and redemption, it is crucial to remember that the fight against injustice transcends screens and reaches into our everyday lives. Jodie Turner-Smith's bold stance serves as a beacon, reminding us that the battle for equality and against racism is one that must be fought relentlessly, both in galaxies far, far away and here on Earth.
