Agatha All Along Episode 5: Darkest Hour/Wake Thy Power Recap & [SPOILER] is WHO?!?

The mystery was most prominent in the fourth episode, where Rio Vidal emerged as the coven's new Green Witch and assisted the group in defeating a fiery demon through a song during their latest trial. Agatha was worried about Teen's injury, pondering whether he could be her son, Nicholas Scratch, although Rio reassures her that he is not. This development nicely sets the stage for the fifth episode, which focuses on Agatha.

If you haven't watched the episode yet, be prepared for SPOILERS as we delve into the events and their significance.

Indeed, episode 5 features the coven conducting a seance, leading to Agatha Harkness being possessed and performing a spider-walk reminiscent of The Exorcist, specifically targeting Teen.

Prior to this intense moment, the coven embarks once more on the Witches' Road in search of their next challenge. The weight of the previous episode's events hangs in the air as Agatha contemplates Rio's revelations about Teen and her own resurfacing emotions for the Green Witch. Eventually, the trial presents itself, following a pursuit by the Salem Seven who infiltrated the Witches' Road through the portal left open by the witches during Rio's summoning!

The seance leading to Agatha's possession created a chilling atmosphere, especially with that nod to The Exorcist. It’s fascinating how the show blends horror elements with its supernatural narrative, really pushing the boundaries of what we expect from the MCU.

The emotional stakes for Agatha, particularly her internal conflict regarding Teen and her feelings for Rio, add a compelling layer to the story. It’s always intriguing when characters face personal dilemmas amidst supernatural chaos.

The appearance of the Salem Seven and their chase through the Witches' Road ramps up the tension, making for a gripping setup. It sounds like the stakes are only getting higher as the series progresses.

Upon entering the house, the coven changes into more casual attire, suitable for either a workout or a sleepover, or perhaps a combination of both. They then proceed to conduct a séance using a Ouija board.

In a particularly eerie moment in the episode, the lights suddenly go out and Agatha vanishes from view. Frantically searching for their leader, the coven is startled by a strange, heavy breathing sound emanating from the darkness. A mysterious substance drips onto Teen, causing him to look up in terror. To their shock, they see Agatha on the ceiling, appearing to be possessed. Amidst the chaos, she drops down and advances towards the enigmatic boy, who is dressed in a makeshift Wiccan outfit, growling menacingly at him.

The casual attire contrasting with the haunting atmosphere really sets the stage for a mix of levity and tension. The use of a Ouija board is a classic horror trope that immediately heightens the suspense, especially when things take a dark turn.

Agatha's possession and her sudden transformation into a menacing figure must have been a shocking moment for both the characters and the audience. The imagery of her on the ceiling is particularly striking, evoking a sense of horror reminiscent of classic supernatural films.

Teen’s reaction, dressed in a Wiccan outfit and facing off against Agatha, adds a layer of vulnerability and tension. It seems like this confrontation is not just about physical danger but also explores deeper themes of power, identity, and perhaps even familial ties.

Agatha was actually being controlled by her own mother, who instructed the coven to abandon her. Despite Alice's efforts to rescue her with magic, Agatha ended up absorbing her powers instead. Teen made an attempt to intervene by talking to Agatha's son, Nicholas Scratch, but it was already too late: Alice had perished.

Although Agatha displayed some regret, the more she was questioned about it, the more she returned to her usual behavior; mocking Teen and revealing a shocking truth before walking away.

That twist adds a dramatic layer to the story! The revelation that Agatha was being controlled by her mother introduces complex family dynamics and explores themes of power and manipulation. It’s tragic that Alice’s efforts to save her daughter resulted in her demise, making Agatha’s situation even more poignant.

Agatha absorbing Alice's powers creates a fascinating conflict—her feelings of regret juxtaposed with her instinct to mock and distance herself from her emotions. This duality adds depth to her character and raises questions about the nature of power and whether it comes with a cost.

Teen’s attempt to connect with Nicholas Scratch also highlights the importance of relationships and understanding in times of crisis, even if it ultimately wasn’t enough to change the outcome. As Agatha walks away, it leaves the audience wondering how her loss and the revelation of her true nature will shape her actions moving forward.

The ending of the episode, however, was the most shocking moment of all, as Alice seemingly died after Agatha accidentally (?) took her powers. Teen responded with anger, and soon afterwards Agatha told him he was so much like his mother.

While Agatha attempted to walk away, she was seized by Lilia and Jen, both of whose eyes had turned the same shade of blue as the light emanating from Teen's hands. It was evident that Teen possessed magical abilities and was controlling both of them.

Following Teen's command, the two of them forcibly pushed Agatha into the dirt at the edge of the Witches' Road (the very same dirt that Mrs. Hart had almost been engulfed by). To everyone's surprise, Agatha was completely engulfed by the earth, pleading for Teen to cease his actions. Upon finishing with them, he raised his arms, causing Lilia and Jen to be flung into the nearby ground, which promptly swallowed them up. As this occurred, a blue crown materialized on his forehead, resembling the crown worn by the Scarlet Witch, Wanda Maximoff.

Wow, that escalated quickly! Teen's emergence as a powerful figure with the ability to control others adds a thrilling twist to the story. The visual of Agatha being forced into the dirt, echoing Mrs. Hart’s earlier experience, creates a strong thematic connection and heightens the tension. It’s as if the earth itself is a character in this narrative, reflecting the dangers of wielding magic without understanding its consequences.

Teen’s transformation, complete with the blue crown reminiscent of Wanda Maximoff, signals a significant shift in his character arc. This moment suggests that he may be tapping into deeper, perhaps darker, magical forces, raising questions about his own identity and the potential consequences of this newfound power.

Agatha’s plea for him to stop adds an emotional layer, showing that despite her often villainous persona, there’s a vulnerability that makes her relatable. It’ll be intriguing to see how this confrontation impacts their relationship and what it means for Agatha’s journey moving forward.

The confirmation that Joe Locke is playing Billy Kaplan, or Wiccan, is an exciting development! It adds a rich layer of context to his character and ties him directly to the broader Scarlet Witch lore. His powerful and unpredictable blue magic aligns with the chaos magic that Wanda is known for, suggesting that he might have a tumultuous journey ahead as he learns to harness his abilities.

The looming question of whether he can remember his true identity in time adds significant tension to the narrative. It sets the stakes high, as not only is he potentially fighting for the lives of Agatha, Lilia, and Jen, but he’s also on a personal quest for self-discovery.

This scenario opens up fascinating possibilities for character development—will he be able to control his powers when it matters most, and how will his connection to Agatha and the coven influence his journey? It’ll be interesting to see how his past and his bond with Wanda might play a role in the upcoming trials.
