Booked & Busy: Keke Palmer Set to Star in 'The Burbs' for Peacock

Keke Palmer starring in a TV adaptation of “The ‘Burbs” sounds like an exciting project! Palmer has a knack for bringing a fresh and engaging energy to her roles, so she could bring a unique spin to the dark comedy of the original film.

Celeste Hughey adapting the film for television is promising, given her experience with shows like “Dead to Me” and “High Fidelity.” With Seth MacFarlane and Brian Grazer involved as executive producers, it seems like the series is in good hands. MacFarlane’s signature humor and Grazer’s production expertise could add an intriguing dimension to the adaptation.

The decision to film on the Universal Studios backlot, just like the original movie, is a nice nod to the classic and should help capture the same atmospheric feel. “The ‘Burbs” has a beloved cult status, so it will be interesting to see how the series updates the story while paying homage to the film’s charm.

The official logline for the series states, “Set in present-day suburbia, ‘The ‘Burbs’ follows a young couple returning to the husband’s childhood home. Their world is upended when new neighbors move in next door, bringing old secrets of the cul-de-sac to light, and new deadly threats shatter the illusion of their quiet little neighborhood.”

With Celeste Hughey and Keke Palmer both taking on executive producer roles alongside their writing and acting responsibilities, respectively, it sounds like there will be a strong creative vision guiding the series. Hughey’s involvement as both writer and executive producer suggests a cohesive approach to adapting “The ‘Burbs” for TV.

Seth MacFarlane’s Fuzzy Door banner, alongside Erica Huggins and Aimee Carlson, and Brian Grazer’s Imagine Entertainment with Kristen Zolner and Natalie Berkus, bring a blend of comedic and dramatic expertise to the project. Their combined experience should contribute to a well-rounded and engaging adaptation.

UCP’s involvement as the studio and Fuzzy Door’s overall deal with UCP indicates a strong partnership, which could be beneficial for the series’ development and execution. The team behind the series seems well-equipped to bring a fresh take on this cult classic while maintaining the spirit of the original film.
