Box Office Report: ‘Alien: Romulus’ Makes $6.5M In Thursday Previews



Alien: Romulus has had a strong start with $6.5M in previews. Both critics and audiences have given it high scores on Rotten Tomatoes, with ratings of 82% and 88% respectively for this Fede Alvarez-directed take on the Ridley Scott production.


When compared to other films, Alien: Romulus is in line with A Quiet Place: Part Two ($6.7M previews, $52M opening), Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes ($6.6M, $58M opening), and Bad Boys: Ride or Die ($6.1M, $57M). Expectations are for this film starring Cailee Spaeny, set between Alien and Aliens, to open at over $40M, securing the top spot and potentially becoming a successful late summer hit leading into September, before Warner Bros’ Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice takes over. The movie is set to be shown in 3,885 theaters, including 400 Imax, 900 PLFs, 275 D-Box/4D motion screens, and 90 ScreenX locations.


Blake Lively continued her winning streak at the daily box office, outperforming Ryan Reynolds for the fourth time this week. On Thursday, It Ends With Us earned $4.9M, surpassing Deadpool & Wolverine‘s $4.56M. It Ends With Us achieved the highest seven-day earnings for a non-sequel this year, with a total of $73.7M. Deadpool & Wolverine has reached a cumulative total of $516.7M. The film, directed, produced, and co-written by Shawn Levy, is projected to make an additional $30M this weekend, while It Ends With Us is expected to maintain its earnings around $22M or potentially more.


The re-release of Coraline by Fathom, shown in 1,570 theaters, generated $3.1M in revenue yesterday. Universal’s Twisters, available for digital purchase and rental, brought in $1.3M across 3,664 theaters on Thursday, marking a 7% decrease from Wednesday. The film has earned a total of $21.3M in its fourth week, reaching $228.6M in total earnings.


Universal's Illumination Despicable Me 4 ranked fifth, earning $12.2M in its sixth week at 3,009 theaters. The film has accumulated a total of $334.4M after making $878K on Thursday, a 6% decrease from Wednesday.


Lionsgate's costly $110M-$120M film Borderlands concluded its first week with $11.1M in earnings, including $416K on Thursday, representing a 22% decline.
