The second weekend of September saw movies approaching the $100M mark for the first time since pre-Covid 2019, mainly due to Warner Bros’ film "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" performing well at the box office, earning $51.6M (-56%) over the weekend with a second Friday of $14.4M and Saturday of $22.5M. The total domestic earnings stand at $188M, with a global total of $264.3M.
On the other hand, Blumhouse/Universal’s film "Speak No Evil" slightly underperformed compared to previous expectations, making $11.5M to $12.3M, but still surpassing its $10M projection. The movie has an arthouse feel, set in the UK countryside with a dialogue-driven quiet thriller narrative. Despite this, it is based on the 2022 Danish horror sensation "Gæsterne," which is quite impressive. The film received a high CinemaScore of B+ for its genre. The audience was predominantly female at 51%, with 38% of viewers being over 35. The demographic breakdown shows 37% Caucasian, 31% Latino and Hispanic, 16% Black, and 10% Asian American. The top markets for this movie are South Central and West, with the AMC Burbank being the highest-grossing venue at around $30K.
In fourth place, the documentary "Am I Racist?" by SDG Releasing/Daily Wire had a commendable start as a wide release, earning $4.75M over the weekend at 1,517 sites, with a Friday gross of $1.96M. The documentary received an A Cinemascore and 5 stars on PostTrak. This marks the third-highest opening for a wide release documentary in the last decade, following Angel Studios’ "After Death" ($5M) and Disney’s 2017 "Born in China" ($4.79M). The diversity turnout was 64% Caucasian, 19% Latino and Hispanic, 6% Black, and 4% Asian American. The audience was predominantly male at 56%, with 59% of viewers being over 35, and the largest age group being 25-34 at 28%.
