Charlie Hunnam to Star in 'Monster' Season 3 as Serial Killer Ed Gein
Ryan Murphy has found his next Monster as we reported last night on our X (formerly Twitter) page, via Variety.
At an event for the upcoming second season of "Monster," Murphy revealed that Sons of Anarchy actor Charlie Hunnam is set to portray the notorious serial killer Ed Gein in Season 3 of the Netflix true-crime anthology.
During the 1950s, Ed Gein admitted to murdering two women and was suspected of exhuming bodies to create souvenirs from human body parts, which later inspired popular horror films such as Psycho and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Charlie Hunnam taking on the role of Ed Gein in Season 3 of Monster is definitely intriguing news! Hunnam’s experience in intense, dramatic roles, particularly his portrayal of Jax Teller in Sons of Anarchy, positions him well to delve into the complex and unsettling character of Gein.
Monster has been successful in bringing real-life criminal cases to the screen with both sensitivity and intensity, as evidenced by the critical acclaim and viewer engagement of its first season. With Evan Peters’ portrayal of Jeffrey Dahmer in the first season and the upcoming focus on the Menendez brothers in Season 2, it’s clear that the series doesn’t shy away from exploring the darkest aspects of human nature.
Ed Gein’s story, with its chilling real-life elements and macabre details, will undoubtedly be a compelling subject for the show. The impact of Gein's crimes on horror cinema and his disturbing legacy make him a fitting, if harrowing, subject for the series.
Hunnam's casting suggests that Season 3 will continue the show's tradition of high-profile, intense performances. It will be fascinating to see how he brings this notorious figure to life and how the show handles the psychological and emotional complexities of Gein's crimes.
