'Chicago Fire' Season 13 Episode 1: A Monster in the Field Review

We open Season 13 with a new chief for firehouse 51. With Boden leaving for Deputy Commissioner. The question of if Herman will be the new chief fir 51 is answered right away. Enter new cast member Dermot Mulroney as chief Pascal with something to prove and changes to be made. Enjoyed the conversation between Herman and Pascal, but there is still tension. Pascal knows Herman has sights on the job of chief, and Herman seems to feel slight intimidation from the new chief. Time will only tell if either one is correct. There are some side stories going on, but when the daily briefing happens chief Pascal makes it clear to 51 tha5 he is not Boden and that there will be changes because he has his own leadership style. The faces of the members of Firehouse 51 all seem taken aback, but before they can comment the alarm sounds for a fire.

Chief Pascal and the 51 handle the fire at Playtime Smoke Shop swimmingly. There were many victims with shrapnel flying everywhere. At one point Damon is pinned by a board and his brother Kelly is stopped in his tracks when this happens. Joe offers to take it from there so that Kelly can help Damon. Just then Violet jumps into action freeing Damon and Kelly continues on his way.

Now back at 51 Violet talks to Carver and lets him know she is interested in them having a conversation soon. Violet made it clear to Ritter and Lyla that she was wrong in pushing Carver away and that she wanted to tell him her true feelings. The new chief comes in and informs everyone that during meals they will put all devices away. This way they can get to know each other better. 51 does not seem to like this with Joe pointing out we hav3 known each other for years. Chief Pascal states this is why we are doing this. You can’t get too familiar. It’s always more to learn more about each other.

Violet is seeking out Carver when she can see him kissing a woman and it takes her by surprise. Not really knowing what to do she discusses what she saw with Ritter and Stella and they both try to calm her down by saying no one knows who she is and that she should not jump to conclusions until she knows more.

Kelly interrupts the conversation letting Stella know that the chief wants to see Stella, Herman, and himself about the call they just came from. Once in the chief's office he lets them know he wants to discuss the call individually with each of them. Stella doesn’t seem to like this method and says she will turn in her report. Pascal makes it clear it’s not an option. Kelly pulls Stella they kiss and we can see that Kelly is trying to comfort Stella, but is this the place or time for this. Stella makes it clear that Pascal is no Boden.

First Briefing is with Kelly they are discussing the call and when they are done Pascal brings up that he knows Kelly and Stella are married the HR handbook is mentioned and the couple are put on notice.

The 51 is on the 2nd call of the day a car crash. The parents seem hurt badly and the children seem to be doing okay. Lyla seems to be engaging the children to keep them calm. In the midst of talking to the daughter of the accident she makes it clear that she is worried about her mother and her little brother was scared. The young girl Lena confesses to Lyla that her daddy crashed them on purpose. Lyla and Stella bring this to the attention of the officer Dwayne that is on the scene. He makes it clear that he will keep them posted.

The briefing between Herman and Pascal and it seems to be a good conversation between two people who love their job. It’s clear that there is respect between the two men.

Stella is talking to Carver about such a horrible accident and it seems like there is more going on with Carver, but he doesn’t let on. Just then the mystery woman pulls up. Sam gets in the car and she asks about his day. Carver seems distant and doesn’t reawaken to discuss the day. She suggests a drink and Sam just goes with the flow.

Pascal has a friend stop by the 51 Lt. Vail. It looks like Pascal doesn't want to talk and all Vail wants is answers. What happened in Miami? Will we find out soon? Vail was about to go further, but Pascal cuts him off and dismisses him. Vail’s partying words are if you need to talk I am here.

Later while the 51 is decompressing at the bar Dwayne comes in to let them know that the mother of Lena has informed him that Lena is a child she doesn’t recall correctly and it was just an accident. Everyone says they were not mistaken and they take it to the chief for his guidance. Pascal gives them permission to investigate within reason. Stella and Kelly have a heart to heart about the accident involving the children. Stella confesses that she still isn’t ready for children and she apologizes to Kelly about that. Kelly makes it clear he isn’t in a rush.

During lunch Herman defends Pascal and says that the rest of the crew needs to give him a chance because he has good ideas.

Violet and Lyla visit Lena at her aunt's home. Lena tells them that her father said it was time to die and that’s when he crashed the car. Since her aunt heard this child protective services now have the right to question the mother. When she is questioned she breaks down and admits that her husband is sick and needs help.

Herman is trying his best to listen to Pascal and thinks he has great ideas. Herman is also reminded that the same thing Pascal is doing German can do and not to sell himself short.

Violet tries to talk to Carver again and Carver was dismissive with her and clearly trying to have boundaries in place.

Stella confesses she has apprehension about Pascal abd Kelly agrees he is a little off.

When Pascal returns home he is unable to Gain access to his home. Clearly the picks have been changed. Pascal calls Veronica and she complains she isn’t happy. He ask her to just open the door and she does. Veronica let’s him know he is a lucky man.

Pascal is a mystery. Is Herman avoiding taking the next step in his career.? Will Violet get three to Carver? What is really going on with Carver?  There are many questions that need to be answered in season 13 of Chicago Fire.
