'Chicago Fire' Season 13 Episode 3 Recap: All Kinds of Crazy
We start with recaps from episode two, we have Stella being honest with Kelly that Damon is a good guy, but he doesn’t belong at fifty one. Kelly apologizes on behalf of Damon for not following orders and keeping it from him. In the end Kelly agrees that Damon will survive this. Ritter and Novak talk about the previous evening that turned out to be a bust. Violet comes in and admits that she drunk texted Carver and feels awful. Novak and Ritter try to make her feel less anxious about the situation, but Violet still feels awkward about the situation. Mouch and Pascal have a brief exchange about how he hurt his hand. He tells Mouch he punched someone, but if his wife asks he went a little too heavy on the body bag. We see Stella approach Damon; it's clear she is upset. Stella acknowledges he is getting a start on the day. Damon says he would like to explain. Stella tells him later, but he pushes. Stella is firm with saying later just as a call comes in. As they come on the scene we see the restaurant on fire then we hear a cry for help. Herman immediately gets on the radio to see how far out engine eighty one is out. When informed that they are two minutes out Herman is clear they don’t have that tote of time. The decision is made to go in. The victim is located and right to safety. Ritter is tasked to clear the rest of the rooms. The smoke is overtaking the building. Pascal screams fir Ritter to evacuate now. Just as he tries to there is an explosion and Ritter is thrown out of the second floor window to the ground.
Ritter is unresponsive, Mouch, Novak, and Violet work on Ritter and get him out of the way. Stella jumps right to task telling her team what to do and where to go. Herman gives his directions and the team are trying to get the fire out. Filter is pulled out of his gear. Pascal talks to him, while Novak explains what just happened to him. His pupils are responsive and the team says they need a full work up. They load Ritter in the ambulance and Pascal tells Herman he can ride with Ritter, they have everything under control. The team is walking through the distinguished fire trying to find out where the explosion came from. Cruz and Kelly discuss what could have possibly caused the explosion. Kelly tells them to finish up and he will inspect upstairs. Kelly is leaving the burnt building and a family approaches. Kelly lets them know they can’t be there. The young girl speaks up and says her family owns the restaurant. They received an alert that the alarm went off and got there as soon as possible. She lets Kelly know her parents speak some English and she fills in the rest. The older woman asked how the fire started. Kelly informs them it’s too soon to tell. The day says she is happy no one was there. Kelly lets them know about the young man that was pulled to safety. The father says that was Cody, a tenet they rented the upstairs apartment to.
Back at fifty one when Violet, and Herman enter, everyone ask about Ritter. They make it clear that Ritter is tough and he will pull through. Next we see Stella go in and ask Pascal if he has time to talk. Pascal says yes and invites her in. Stella is honest and candid about the situation with Damon and wants him back into the floater pool. Pascal seems taken aback because this is the first time he is hearing anything about Damon. Pascal is very condescending to Stella and talks about turnover on her rig again. Pascal puffs out his chest and says he makes the final decisions there and maybe her leadership needs to be evaluated. He is clear that he is the chief of the fifty one and she is dismissed.
Stella and Kelly are talking in his office. Kelly offers to talk to Pascal. Stella appeals to him not to because it will only make her look weaker. They are discussing the matter when Kelly gets a call from the captain. Kelly is being requested at headquarters to review some evidence. Herman overhears and asks if it’s about the restaurant fire. Kelly let’s him know it is. Herman asks if they think it wasn’t just an accident. Kelly says they don’t know yet and it’s not a top priority since no one was badly injured. Herman becomes upset stating Ritter could have been killed if he didn’t land in those bushes. Herman implores Kelly to find out what happened and if it was arson the person has to take responsibility. Meeting with the captain he asked if this was cleared with Pascal. Kelly says yes, tge captain says you look surprised. Kelly says they are getting used to Pascal. The captain says each new chief has to put their stamp on a new house, but he knows Pascal always took care of his people and doesn’t think that would change now. Kelly asks if you know him. He says they have worked on a case before and that Pascal is a hell of a firefighter. They discuss the fire and go over photos. Kelly realizes that this fire could have been way worse. Just then and angry looking Cody the man rescued from the fire approaches the room and ask for Lt. Severide. Kelly looks taken aback and says Cody? Cody approaches Kelly aggressively and Captain Vanmeter introduces himself. He asks Cody to calm down and to back up. Cody wants to know what was said to the Chin’s. Cody says that the Chin’s came to the hospital when he was getting treated and accused him of starting the fire. Kelly asks why they would think that and what was he doing there. Cody says they raised his rent extremely high and he was very upset. Kelly asks did you threaten them? Cody said maybe, but he would never burn down the building. He says he was there getting some things he left behind. Captain Vanmeter asked did he see or hear anyone else. Cody then says he heard wheels screeching away just before the smoke started. Cody says he didn’t want to run into the Chin’s and get caught up in their drama. Cody says the couple were always arguing and he was glad to move out.
Damon is called into Pascal's office and he seems nervous. Damon’s demeanor changes when Pascal says he would like his perspective on the boat call last shift. Once Pascal says that Damon proceeds to tell his side, by attacking Stella and her leadership skills, he makes it a point to say she is not clear in her orders all of the time. Pascal doesn’t lead the questioning; he allows Damon to talk. Pascal is taking in everything being said.
Violet is going hard on the heavy bag when an update on Ritter comes in and she shares the information with Novak. Novak asks if she got a response from Carver? Violet says no and when she tried to talk to him about it earlier he practically ran from her. Novak seems to think Carver is letting her off the hook for the text. Violet says great then she can pretend she didn’t send it. Just then they get a child in distress call. Novak and Violet move out. Arriving on the scene the little boy is on the floor unconscious. The grandmother says she went to take a quick phone call and he was like that when she got back. Her pill box was empty. They asked how many pills were in the daily reminder container. She said she had just filled it that morning so he took all of them. They are rushing him to the hospital when the bus hits a bump in the ground, everything goes out electronically. Violet calls for a backup ambulance and is told none are in the area. Novak yells he is going into cardiac arrest. Violet jumps out of the ambulance and goes to work under the hood praying what she did works. When she is able to turn on the ambulance she floors it to the hospital.
Stella and Kelly are discussing that Damon was in with Pascal, but they have no idea what the conversation was about. Kelly mentions that Vanmeter speaks highly of Pascal and says that he is fair. Kelly says he is investigating this like a fire cop. Damon approaches Stella asking for Kelly, she lets him know where he is. Damon says he will finish up the letters. Damon is smug, while Stella is very apprehensive.
Kelly goes to the Chin's home asking them if he can speak with them. The daughter says she took the day off work to help her parents. Kelly asks if she works at tge restaurant? She says sometimes, but she works at a boutique as her main job. Davis Chin asks about Cody. David Chin thinks it was Cody. Kelly relays the conversation he has earlier with Cody about the rent being raised and the arguments. Kelly asks what were the arguments about, where they had money troubles? Mr. Chin says there was always a crowd, but when it came to what they argued about he just spoke to Mrs. Chin in their native language and told Kelly that it was private between husband and wife. Kelly makes it clear if he doesn’t get answers it will not be good. The daughter speaks up and says her mom wants to sell and her father doesn’t. The Chin’s all exchange glances. The mom speaks up and says it’s her fault. They begin to talk and the daughter translates that her mom thinks she left the rice cooker on last night and it had been on th3 fritz lately. They speak again the family and then Mr. Chin walks out. Kelly gets to his feet and looks puzzled.
Violet and Novak approach Ritter's room. Ritter's partner officer Dwayne Morris is on the phone with Kelly as he relays the rice cooker theory to him. Ritter asks why they are there. They try to examine him. Ritter says he has been checked over and is good they are letting him go soon. Ritter asks Violent what happened to her radio. She tells him she used it to fix the rig to get their young patient to the hospital. Novak brags on Violet skills. Dwayne lets Ritter know that he asked Kelly to keep him in the loop about the restaurant fire and that was him on the phone. Herman shows up and is happy to see Ritter is doing well. Herman says his wife made baked ziti and he will bring it by later. Ritter says they didn't have to do all of this. Everyone says they are concerned and just wants him better. Ritter says I will be back next shift. He lets them know he is perfectly fine. Everyone says you never say no to Cindy’s baked ziti. Laughter and conversation ensues.
We are back at fifty one. Mouch is telling Pascal that Ritter has been discharged and everything looks normal. Pascal says he is impressed with Mouch and how dedicated he is to the job. Pascal asked if I needed you to step up and become a lieutenant could you? Mouch says he can, but he wouldn’t be at fifty one. Pascal says you never know and walks away. Mouch looks bewildered.
At the restaurant Vanmeter says that rice cookers have a fail safe. They turn off when the food is done cooking. Kelly and Vanmeter investigate more and come across charred plastic and they notice more of it all over the kitchen. Eventually,they find the rice cooker. Kelly says with the range of debris it was not a fire and looks like it was an explosion, how does that happen.
Mouch approaches Stella and asks if everything is okay between the chief and herself. Mouch says there seems to be tension between the two of them. Stella admits he is right and she recalls her conversation with the chief about Damon. Stella says Pascal put it all back on her and his turnover on the truck is concerning. Stella says he questioned her leadership and now she is on the chopping block.
Cruz, Herman, Novak, and Violet are at the bar hanging out. Carver and his friend show up to join. Carver introduces everyone to Tori. Carver says to Violet that he heard about her fixing the rig on the spot. Violet says not a big deal and she remembers when he helped her with her car battery. Tori doesn’t seem to like the interaction w between Carver and Violet. She makes a point to say it’s great to meet everyone, especially the infamous Violet. Violet lets everyone know she is leaving and Tori watches closely as she leaves.
Pascal arrives home and Monica comes downstairs looking at his judgengly. Monica asks if he went to Vail’s house and punched him? Just when it looks like Monica is going to tear into him again she kisses him deeply. This jealousy is clearly a turn on for Monica Pascal. This seems to be a game they have played before. There is a knock at the door. Pascal wants to ignore it, but Monica tells him to answer it. It’s Mouch and he says his goal is to be a lieutenant and that he has learned from the best lieutenants in the CFD, especially Stella Kidd. Pascal says you came to my home to tell me this. In the background Monica walks away. Mouch says I think you need to go over her records so you have the full story. He presents Pascal with three filled folders. Mouch says I know you believe that knowledge is power and he knows that he has concerns about turnovers. Mouch says I have included information about turnovers in the files. He apologizes for interrupting him at home and then leaves.
The captain and Kelly are deep into the restaurant investigation when the finances and chem analysis records are bright in. The restaurant was doing well financially according to the records, but he tried to take a second mortgage on his home. They are thinking of financial stress that he doesn’t want to admit. The captain jumps to his feet because paint thinner was found inside the rice cooker. They look at each other and Captain Vanmeter says someone turned the rice cooker into a bomb.
Violet pulls up to the fifty one and observes Tori and Carver kissing. She stops and takes a breath. Carver walks off to giro inside the building. Tori sees Violet and goes out of her way to let him know that she saw her little text and deleted it. Tori makes it clear that she wants Violet to stay clear of Carver. She says she lost him once and will not lose him again. Tori leaves by threatening Violet and points out that Carver says she was smart so she knows that she gets it.
Damon goes into the chief's office. Pascal thanks him fir coming in early. Pascal informs Damon he will be going back into the floater pool. Damon is shocked and not really comprehending. Pascal is clear he has new information that lets him know that Lt. Kidd is an excellent leader. Damon tries to argue that she isn’t always clear. Pascal says I went over the restaurant call where Ritter was hurt and she didn’t miss a beat. He also told Damon he went over past calls as well and she is a solid leader. Pascal says he learned more about the house and Kidd Pascal says he broke the trust of his lieutenant and there is no getting it back. Dismissing Damon is his only option.
Ritter walks into the common area, everyone applauds and calls him a hero. Ritter tells everyone to calm down. They all surround him. Welcome him back and say that the true hero was the bush he landed on. The pay tells Ritter they bought him something. The team planted a part of the bush in a flower pot. It was presented to Ritter and they said the name is Reggie Bush. Ritter lets them know they are the worst. Everyone laughs. Violet comes in and gives Ritter a big hug. She asks if she saw Dwayne in the break room. Ritter says Kelly asked him to come in this morning because there has been a breakthrough in the case. They all look worried.
We are back with the Chin’s. There is Officer Dwayne, Lt. Severide, and Captain Vanmeter. They inform the Chins it was not a fire, but arson. They let them know that the rice cooker was rigged to blow. The daughter says it’s crazy who would do that. Kelly says to your mother. She wanted to sell and your father didn’t. David and Grace begin to speak. The mother looks on and slightly perplexed. Grace says mom didn’t do this, stop it to her father. The mother speaks up and says yes she did. Grace says she doesn’t know what she is saying. Kelly says to the mother you can’t always protect your family. Kelly says that Cody heard a car, who has access to a car and drives. Dwayne speaks up and says they are pulling CCTV right now and what do you think we will find? Everyone is quiet then Dwayne says we can arrest your mom right now. The daughter finally admits that she did it. She talks to her parents. They ask why because they give her everything. Kelly chimes in everything including the restaurant. He explains that’s not what she wanted is it.
The daughter Grace said she didn’t know how to tell him because there was so much fighting. She thought they could take the insurance money, be happy and she could live her own life. Kelly asked, "Is this why you wanted to sell? Davis asked his wife did she know? She admits that she did because Grave was unhappy. Officer Dwayne takes Grace and places her under arrest.
Herman has a heart to heart with Ritter letting him know how great Dwayne was with the entire situation. Herman says he has a good partner that truly cares for him.
Pascal talks to Stella and tells her that Damon is done on fifty one. He lets her know that there is a floater in shift today and she makes the decision on who stays permanently. Pascal says to just make sure whoever she picks last. It seems to be meant as a joke, but it doesn't seem that Stella took it that way. Later Damon is waiting in Kelly’s office angry. Kelly says you will get another job and this is for the best. Damon says he came to the fifty one to get to know him abd learn from him. Damon seems not to take any responsibility saying that Kelly was too busy working an arson case instead of being there for him when he needed him the most.
Damon makes a really harsh judgment about their father. He lets Kelly know you think you put Benny in the past well you are Benny and the he walks away leaving Kelly dumbfounded.
