Chicago Med Season 10 Episode 2 "Bite Your Tongue" Review

Bite your tongue episode two was an episode that was a little slower pace than episode one. It was good to get a little bit more meat on the bone with the characters this season. We open with tension in the ED in several areas. There is the Co-chiefs of the  ED situation between Archer and Lenox and then we have the entire ED department on eggshells because it seems that Goodwin is on a law off spree. At this point everyone is nervous. Ripley and Asher have seemed to have made up and just when things get interesting Ripley is paged to see Goodwin. Fun times are interrupted by the page while both Ripley and Asher are left contemplating what Goodwin wants with him.

Maggie tries to console some of the laid off staff, not many really want to hear it. Others wonder why the layoffs are happening now when Jackson Monroe is about to close. Some staff are being transferred over, but the worry of being short staffed is real. Just then we see Dr. Frost is back and thanks Maggie for helping to facilitate his residency transfer. Maggie says thank you and quickly sends him to see a patient.

Dr. Frost is sent to Max’s room a patient complaining about possible broken ribs. Dr. Frost talks to Max and his parents. They discuss his soccer career and how regionals are coming up. Mac says things have been good since his surgery. Dr. Frost checks the chart and notices Max is in remission from a sarcoma tumor he had removed last year. Max's parents point out he is a fighter and that they will talk to his coach about the physicality of practice. Dr. Frost takes an extra and lets them know he can’t see a fracture, but suggests a CT scan to look a little deeper. Dr. Frost goes to Maggie to secure the scan and also request that oncology be looped in on this case.

Ripley is about to go into Godwin’s office when another laid off employee comes out. Goodwin invites Ripley in. Goodwin informs Ripley that the hospital has been informed of a witness that has placed Ripley at the scene of the assault on the man that files a malpractice suit against him. Goodwin informs him he has left the hospital in jeopardy. Goodwin tells Ripley you may have spoken to the police, but now there is a committee hearing later in the day. Goodwin says he brought him in so that he can take the rest of the morning to go over his statement. Goodwin is clear this is more than being laid off, he could be suspended or even lose his medical license. This is a very important situation.

Lenox and Archer are in talks about how the ED should be run. Lenox points out that sent a detailed email on how to run an efficient ED. Archer is not in the mood or mindframe to hear Dr. Lenox out at all. He scoffs at the time the email is sent, he is quick to try and be the one to divide the ED. Lenox allows this and doesn’t complain. Archer says he will do all the trauma and she will do emergency medicine. Archer seems to think his plan is seamless and a clear cut line. Lenox admits she doesn’t think this will work. Just then a patient is brought to Archer and Lenox. The patient is given to Archer since it was trauma. The patient Archer has some symptoms that don’t add up for an ankle injury. Archer decides to have more test runs to try to get a better assessment.

Meanwhile Ripley and Asher are discussing his conversation with Goodwin. Asher is clearly concerned and makes that known. Asher says that this is now the time to go to Sulley and have him come forward with the truth. Ripley doesn’t want to think about that. He explains that Sulley just finished chemo and he can finally spend time with his wife and child. Ripley says he hasn’t spoken to Sulley about this yet. Asher asks if Sulley is such a good friend do you really think he would allow you to take the fall for his actions. Ripley says he will talk to him about it.

Dr. Asher is called in with a patient that is pregnant and fallen. The patient is very irritable and her husband informs the doctor that they had a miscarriage in the past. The fetal heart monitor shows a strong heartbeat. Dr. Asher is very kind and says they want to xray the wrist. As Asher walks out the husband takes Dr. Asher to the side and apologizes on behalf of his wife. He states she has a huge fight with her sister and she isn’t usually this upset. He is also concerned that his wife seems a bit confused.

Goodwin is in a sad state and is venting to another doctor how she was told to trim up the fat and it’s not a good feeling. Once she steps off the elevator into the ED there is no one that is happy to see her. Dr. Charles approaches Goodwin with concern that Ripley is being brought before the Wellness committee today. Goodwin and Charles go into a quiet room. Goodwin says that as a friend he should have warned her that Ripley had violent tendencies. Dr. Charles explains that Ripley was his and he couldn’t do that. Goodwin informs him that there should have been a way without crossing legal boundaries and she asks him to recuse himself from the hearing. Dr. Charles says he thinks that is for the best. He also goes on to say that he feels that he failed Ripley in the past and the doctor we know now is not the same doctor he treated in the past. Goodwin leaves and Dr. Asher approaches Dr. Charles. She wants to loop him in on the pregnant patient. Asher says she pulled the patient's medical records when her scans came back clean. Dr. Charles says she has been on an antipsychotic for fifteen years. Asher asks if the medication has stopped working. Charles looks perplexed.

Student Dr. Howard goes to Dr. Archer and lets him know there is a patient with extreme GI distress. Archer says to go see Lenox. Lenox and Howard assess the patient and Lenox ask Howard what she should do. Just as Lenox confirms those tests will be run the patient from earlier with the ankle seems to have breathing problems. Howard runs to assist and Archer suggests intubation. Howard says this may not work. Archer asks why, and  it’s then noticed that the patient’s tongue is severely swollen.

Ripley hears that Sulley is at Gaffney and makes his way to see him. Sulley says he is getting results of a final test. Ripley asks him to lunch after he is done. Sully says this sounds serious Ripley gives nothing away and says he will be waiting once he's out.

Max’s parents are now in the consultation room with Dr. Frost and the oncology doctor. They inform them that the cancer is back and it has metastasized all over his body. They ask how long he has. The doctors inform them it may be three months. They beg that there has to be more they can do. The oncologist says that there is a surgery, but their son's quality of life will not be the same. He will be wheelchair bound and need constant care, but that would give them six months with their son. The parents want the surgery.

Dr. Charles meets with a pregnant patient. They go over her chart. Charles asks about her medication, specifically Rasparidal. The patient says she was diagnosed as schizophrenic fifteen years ago. The husband chimes in and says he has never seen her act out and the diagnosis was before they met. Dr. Charles goes to Dr. Asher and requests a Rasparidal level test when they do the patient's blood work. Dr. Charles says he just wants to check because there have been small cases that have linked the medication to miscarriages. Dr. Charles says they need to do more research. Asher says that test could take awhile. Charles says they need to keep her overnight if they can.

Dr. Howard is now back with the GI patients. Labs came back normal. Dr. Lenox asks if there are chicken and ducks on the farm. She says no, but they have a lot of hens for the eggs. Dr. Howard says Avian flu and she thought about that when they said they were farmers. Dr. Lenox asked why she didn't speak up. Howard is non commital. Dr. Lenox says in the profession it’s important that she is confident  and assertive if she isn’t then talk into the mirror until she is. Dr. Lenox lets her know this is very important especially for a woman. Just then Howard is called into Dr. Arche’s ankle patient and asked about labs. Again nothing stands out in the labs at all. Dr. Archer says something isn’t adding up. They run more tests to rule all other illnesses out. Archer also points out that this patient is more important than the GI patient she is working with Lenox.

Max’s parents tell him the cancer is back. Max complains that regionals are in a couple of weeks. Max’s parents paint on the biggest smile and say with one more simple surgery he will be good as new for regionals. Dr. Frost hears this and immediately wants to speak to Max’s parents . When they go into the room Dr. Frost  asks why they are lying to Max. The parents admit he has lost so much, they didn’t have the heart to tell him he was terminal. Dr. Frost says he understands, but Max has the right to know the truth about the surgery. The parents go back and forth with Dr. Frost informs him he is not to discuss the truth about the surgery to Max.

Dr. Charles observes Sulley and Ripley hugs it out shortly after Sulley leaves. Dr. Asher then approaches Dr. Charles and says there is no trace of tge Rasparidal in her system. Charles asked if she could have slowly stopped taking it when she found out she was pregnant. Asher says she doesn’t know, but asks how long until she starts exhibiting signs. Charles says he thinks that’s what she is currently experiencing now. Asher asks if an episode has caused her fall. Charles says it's a possibility. In the middle of discussing next steps a nurse comes over and says Kendall is checking herself out. When the doctors confront Kendall and her husband Kendall is extremely irritable saying she is doing what is best for her baby. She goes back and forth with the duct while her husband says nothing. Dr. Charles explains they know she isn’t taking her medication. Kendall says she is fine and doesn't think she belongs on the medication anyway. Kebab asks her husband Bryce to go retrieve her phone she left behind. Dr. Charles follows and talks to Bryce. He explains that this is a very serious dangerous situation and he thinks his wife could possibly be putting her and their child’s life in danger. Dr. Charles expresses it's great that you have never seen her have an episode, but when she does it can be very challenging very quickly. Dr. Charles asks the argument that was heard earlier could it be that she wasn’t actually on the phone? Bryce says how is that possible. Dr. Charles implores him to check her call log to see if she was actually on the phone. Just then Kendall comes in and says let’s go. Bryce looks at Dr. Charles and says he thinks thugs will be fine. Dr. Charles wishes him luck as he leaves.

Dr. Frost goes to Dr. Lenox about the dilemma that he is having with Max’s parents. Lenox is clear that Max is still a minor and the parents' wishes should be honored. Dr. Archer calls Dr. Frost over and says that he thinks his residence should have autonomy as long as it’s not stepping over certain lines. Dr. Frost takes his decision and runs with it while Lenox looks on disapprovingly. Lenox asks Archer why did he interfere if this was emergency medicine. Archer says he came in with broken ribs that’s trauma and walks away.

We are now in the wellness hearing and Ripley is being told of the danger that his actions put the hospital in with his actions. They go into detail that the motive of retaliation is clear and this reflects badly on him as a doctor and the hospital as a whole. When it comes down to the direct question that Ripley is asked, his response is no comment. Goodwin implores him to cooperate because he could face indefinite suspension. Asher looks on in disbelief. Asher confronts Ripley about the hearing and she asks what happened and he says he changed his mind. Asher asks did Sulley ask you to do this. Ripley says he never talked to him because Sulley’s results show that he is terminal. Ripley confesses that he doesn’t want his last days going through court appearances and possible jail should be spent with his family. Asher tries to argue that Sulley would not want this when your career is on the line. Ripley says he will not put his friend through this and walks away.

We are back with our ankle patient and her kidneys are starting to fail. Dr. Archer is informed they may need dialysis. Just then Dr. Howard comes in and tries to discuss the patient across the hall that is having very odd symptoms and is a patient of Dr. Lenox. Archer says she can tend to her own patients. Howard says she understands, but the patient Tyler is having very odd symptoms as well and now his kidneys are failing. Dr. Howard suggests that Lenox and Archer compare notes. Both doctors get together and go over the cases together. At first nothing is in common. Once they start talking more they suspect that the two patients have something in common. They both go and question Tyler about selling pot and using pesticides. Tyler admits that he has and that he has sold it on the nearby college campus. Both doctors bombard Dr. Howard with what they want don’t to both of their patients. Dr. Howard takes her marching orders and gets to work.

We are with Dr. Frost and Max. It’s clear Dr. Frost told Max the truth. Once Max confronts his parents they become very angry and Max’s dad asks to speak to Dr. Frost in the hall. Immediately Max’s dad punches Dr. Frost in the face. The ED is in shock and Maggie requests Max’s dad be taken into custody. Dr. Frost intervenes and says no it was just a misunderstanding. Max’s dad screams don’t ever talk to my son again.

Maggie lets Dr. Asher knows the ambulance is on its way bringing a twenty two week pregnant patient in. It is Kendall that discharged herself earlier. Kendall now has pressure on the brain if they don’t relieve the pressure it could herniate. Kendall’s husband says they were leaving the grocery store and Kendall started yelling in the parking lot that they were trying to get her. He admits he tried to calm her, but she was fast and darted out into traffic. Asher is notified that are getting the ER prepared. She tells them there is no time and they must elevate the pressure now. Asher relieves the pressure right in the trauma room, the baby heartbeat is now steady and Kendall’s blood pressure is stabilizing . She lets her team know this is a temporary fix and they need to get to the ER asap.

We are at the end of the hour and wrapping up all cases. Bryce speaks to Dr. Charles admits he was so scared to check her call log, but he did and she was not on the phone when she had the outburst. Just then Asher comes to give an update. It seems the surgery went well and the baby seems okay, but Kendall is not out of the woods. The next forty eight hours are crucial.

Now that Archer and Lenox finally know the cause of the problem with their two patients they let him know she needs to stay overnight to make sure the pesticides are out of her system. Dr. Archer let's cadet Harrera know to stay away from the pot. Her superior officer asked Dr. Archer, how did this happen. Dr. Archer says she could have possibly ingested something without knowing. Dr. Archer knew that if pot smoking was known she would lose her scholarship.

Dr. Frost is begging to let Max’s dad go, he doesn’t want to press charges. Goodwin asks why did you go against the patient's parents wishes. Archer steps up and says yup that was me. I told him to try and skirt the line. Lenox steps in and says what Dr. Frost did advocate for his patient and she agrees with his approach. The oncology doctor comes in and says they are taking Max in for surgery. Frost says that can’t be right and rushes to Max’s side. Max asks for privacy to speak to Dr. Frost. Frost tries to explain again what happens if he gets the surgery. Max tells Frost that he understands, but he has made a list on what he was going to accomplish with his life the first time he was diagnosed with cancer. He says now the list seems unrealistic. Max goes on to say the one thing he can do is make his parents happy by getting the surgery and that’s what he wants to do. Dr. Frost says to Max that he is doing the right thing.

We cut to Archer and Lenox. Archer admits that dividing the ED like that may not have been the best idea and that they worked somewhat well together. Archer says he printed out her email and many suggestions have merit, but he still has notes. Archer handed her the email with tons of red pen marks all over her email. Lenox is not happy.

Ripley is at the police station to turn himself in. Ripley tells the officer at the front desk why he is there. The officer tells him to take a number and have a seat. Just then with ominous music playing we see Sully being led out by an officer in handcuffs. Sulley gives Ripley a nod and they walk away. We cut to Asher's apartment doorbell ringing. Once she answers the door Ripley asks what the hell did she do and we face to black.

Will Ripley and Asher overcome this new obstacle in their relationship? We shall see Wednesday!!
