Chicago P.D. Season 12 Episode 6: Pawns Recap: Burgess Under Pressure: A Critical Test and a Fatal Pursuit

In tonight's gripping episode of Chicago PD, Kim Burgess found herself at a pivotal moment in her career—she was finally taking the detective exam, a long-awaited milestone after years of dedication in the Intelligence unit. Throughout her time on the force, Burgess had demonstrated an unmatched ability to navigate complex investigations and uncover the truth. She knew exactly what it took to pursue a lead, interrogate suspects, and solve a case. But as she sat down to take the test, it became clear that nerves were getting the better of her. It wasn’t the written portion of the exam that had her on edge; she had studied exhaustively for that. It was the ride-along that had her heart racing.

As part of the evaluation, Burgess was paired with an experienced detective who would observe her every move, assessing her ability to think on her feet and execute under pressure. Unfortunately, the detective wasn’t making things any easier. The shadowing officer’s cold demeanor only added to Burgess’s anxiety, especially as they were immediately thrust into a high-stakes situation.

The ride-along quickly took an intense turn when the two were called to investigate a homicide. The victim, Raul Tobias, had been shot and killed during a robbery attempt when he tried to stop thieves from stealing the catalytic converter from his car. Raul had grabbed his gun in an attempt to defend himself, but was overpowered by the thieves, one of whom he managed to shoot before succumbing to his injuries. There were likely three thieves involved, although not all were armed. The man that Raul had injured tried to flee and took refuge in a neighbor’s house.

Following the blood trail from the victim’s home, Burgess tracked the injured suspect to the neighbor’s house, which quickly became the scene of an intense pursuit. The chase escalated as one of the thieves bolted into the streets, forcing Burgess to run after him. She was determined, closing the distance between them as he darted through alleys and down blocks. Just as Burgess was about to apprehend him, the suspect made a fatal mistake. He ran directly into traffic and was struck by a truck, killing him instantly.

The incident was a tragic turn of events, and it didn’t look good for Burgess. The fact that a suspect had died as a result of a foot pursuit with Burgess at the helm would surely raise questions about her handling of the situation. To make matters worse, the detective shadowing her wasn’t even around to provide a witness to exonerate her. The detective had been called away to attend to a personal emergency involving her son, leaving Burgess to deal with the aftermath alone.

The situation was starting to look grim for Burgess. There were doubts about her decisions, and the scrutiny of her actions was mounting. She was even warned that in the future, she should delegate responsibilities, especially in situations like the foot pursuit, which might have been better handled by patrol officers rather than someone in Burgess’s position. As the investigation progressed, Burgess also realized that she had lost a key lead by following Carlos Garza, one of the suspects. In hindsight, she admitted she should have left that pursuit to the experts in the field.

Returning to the crime scene, Burgess noticed something crucial—a car was missing from the driveway. After reviewing the footage from nearby security cameras, she realized that one of the thieves had touched the vehicle without gloves. This was a huge break in the case. The thief’s prints were likely left on the car, but unfortunately, because the car had left the scene, the chain of evidence had been compromised, making it difficult to use the prints to build a solid case.

Undeterred, Burgess continued her investigation and tracked down the car, eventually obtaining the prints she needed. After further digging, she identified one of the thieves as Jorge Reyes, a man with a notorious criminal background. Reyes had once worked for Rafael Perez, a now-deceased gang leader whose territory had been taken over by a new gang. The new players in town, however, were not interested in working with Perez’s old associates. This revelation opened up a web of new connections and possible motives, giving Burgess the lead she desperately needed to push forward with the case.

As the episode unfolded, it was clear that Burgess was not only trying to prove herself as a capable detective but also dealing with the weight of the responsibilities that came with the role. Despite the setbacks, including the unfortunate fatality and the pressure of her evaluation, Burgess’s perseverance and sharp instincts began to shine through. She was one step closer to cracking the case, even if the path to getting there wasn’t as smooth as she had hoped.
