Chicago PD Season 12 Episode 5: Water and Honey Review

This week starts in the midst of a storm in the city. Torres seems to be on the night shift. Burgess and Atwater offer to stay, but he tells them no to go home before it gets worse outside. Officer Cook from episode two who worked with Ruzek shows up soaking wet. She inquires about Ruzek. Torres says he isn’t in, but he remembers when she helped out. She looks to leave, but Torres offers to help. In the squad car she says there was a woman that called in a distress call that disconnected. She said she was being chased on foot and the line went dead.

They sent her and her partner to the last known location. Cook and her partner looked for an hour, but he called it. Cook wanted to do more, but her partner didn’t want to. Torres asks if she thinks there is more. She described the scene and said yes that’s why I need help. They arrive at a home with no answer.  Torres says they can do a knock and talk and see if anyone has heard anything. In the entire neighborhood no one is answering. One home leads to the woods they both go to search. The woods back to a stream. It’s dark, raining and windy, but Cook manages to spot a floating body. At first Torres doesn’t see it. When he does he says he is going to fit the body and to hold the light on him. Cook calls in the body to get an ambulance. Cook determines there is no pulse and it looks to be a thirteenth year old girl. Torres calls in this case as well. While it’s lightning, it can see another person in the woods with the light flashing. Torres goes to investigate. Torres isn’t able to see anything.

We now have the team assembled in the woods with a makeshift area trying to keep them dry. Voight has the team listening to the 911 call. Burgess was able to find identification. The victim is Lucy Childsmen. She is fourteen years old and she had a cellphone on her, but it died from the rain. Voight asked if they found anything in the woods. Torres said no, but they are still looking. Burgess says that she hasn’t been reported as missing yet. Voight looks directly at Cook and asks if you were the one to respond to the call, and your gut told you to come back. She replied yes sir. Voight said good for you. Other officers show up offering to assist canvassing the wooded area, they are from Cooks squad. Voight points out the need for all evidence before the rain washes it away. Voight gives the new team some direction and tells his team to get the body to the morgue and lets Cook and Torres know to notify the family. Torres says to Cook they need to go. Cook says she needs to stay back with patrol to help them. Torres says to her that Voight just assigned you to this case. You found it, it’s your work. Cooks says he is right, lets go.

At Lucy’s home her mother is informed of her death. Lucy’s mother isn’t shocked and says she knew it would happen. She says Lucy always sneaks out and has a black heart. They ask do you know where she was, who she was with. Lucy’s mom says no, she was supposed to be here sleeping. She says one of her friends looks like a ghost, that’s all she knows. Back at the precinct Torres says that kinda describes who he saw in the woods, pale skin, white blond hair. The team comes in and gets to work, Cook is in the background lingering. Ruzek tells Cook to take a desk, she says I’ll float, he says no take this desk. Burgess says if she wants to change she has extra clothes if she needs them. You can see that Cook looks appreciative and shocked at the reception she is receiving with this team. They go over what evidence they have which isn’t much. There is no trail, nothing. Cook taking off her gear looks at her body camera and she gets an idea. Torres and Cook go to review her body cam footage. They are able to find the girl in the footage and put the face in facial recognition. It comes back as Jess Marks fourteen years old, looks like she has a juvenile record.

Torres and Cook are back on the street looking for Jess. We know most likely they met in juvie; they were in there at one point  together. Jess is in the custody of her uncle and has been there since she was ten, her parents have been in and out of jail for drugs. There doesn’t seem to be any violent crimes. Burgess calls Torres and says forensics came back that there was a hair follicle on Lucy’s shirt that matched Jess. Cook said they could have shared clothes, Burgess says that it could also mean that she is the perp. Burgess says to do a quiet walk by, she is on her way. No movement outside but there seems to be packages on the front, trash in the back. Torres comes upon a door that is ajar. Torres says he is going in and to be on alert. Torres doesn’t get far before he smells a strong odor. Torres radios in that he is going in to do a wellness check. During the check we see tge house in disarray, moldy food, trash. Torres continuously calls out Chicago PD. They see a trail that could be blood, possibly dripped from upstairs. They follow the trail into a room. In a chair a man is sitting and they ask to see his hands. As they get closer there is a man who looks deceased with gray eyes, mouth wide open with ants and flies coming in and out. Torres radios in that they have a DOA. Cook looks closer and says that there looks like there is something in the mouth. It looks like there is honey in his mouth. The team and forensics are now at the house. Forensics says it looks like he was waterboarded using honey. She says his nose was held and you can tell he was held down on both arms. Cook confirms that they positively identified him as Liam Marks, Jess’s uncle and there was no forced entry. Voight asks if they know where Jess is. Torres says neighbors say they haven’t seen her in days. Cook points out that Jess doesn’t have a cellphone. They decide to search the home to find any clues to Jess’s whereabouts. Going through Jess’s room it’s the typical teenage girl room. Cook talks about having two best friends at this same age and they were inseparable. She asked Torres if he had friends like that. He admits no, but also says he was in juvie and he was just trying to survive. Torres keeps looking for clues and finds a postit note. It’s clearly a note from the uncle to Jess in the note he calls her honey.

Back at the precinct they are all together trying to put pieces together. Voight asks if there was any evidence of abuse, they say none, but it doesn’t mean that it didn’t happen. Atwater comes in and says that the ME confirms that he was asphyxiated. They were also able to determine that Liam was held down and he was held down by small hands and can tell it was three people that held him down. Cook points out that Lucy’s mom said girls meaning plural. All the photos had the three girls that they found in Jess’s bedroom. So far the third girl has not been identified. Torres gets a call that someone has eyes on Jess and they go to check it out. At the viaduct encampment the Sergeant says he didn’t approach, he was waiting for them. They divide up how they will approach stating it needs to be nice and slow. Cook is the last to fall out. Everyone is looking for the yellow tent.  Cook finds the tent first and signals that she found it. Jess spots her and zips up the tent. Next thing she and another girl try to escape. Burgess apprehends Jess as she tells the other girl to run. The other girl is running, Cook, Torres and the Sergeant are all in pursuit. A warehouse garage door is closing and the girl rolls under there. Cook is locked out. She tries to get in, but the girl is gone.

Back at the precinct Jess is cuffed to a pipe screaming for them to uncuff her. Voight says he can’t while she is acting like this. Jess is extremely angry and trying to calm her isn’t working. Voight can’t get through. Torres tells her if you don’t calm down they will escalate and she will not like the outcome. Voight says to just tell them the name of the girl that was with her. Jess is silent. Torres tries and asks what happened to Lucy. Jess becomes enraged and says don’t say her name. Torres asks why, Jess says that they didn’t try to help her. Torres said they did, but she was already dead when they got her out of the river. He asks what happened to Liam. Jess says you tried to save him, Torres says no he was already dead and we know you three girls did this. Jess says she did it was only her, don’t try to say you three girls because it was only her. Torres says you don’t want those types of charges on only you and the6 will try you as an adult. She says she doesn’t care, that she did it, she is the only one that killed Liam.

Torres and Cook are at the juvenile facility looking for answers, but not getting a lot of cooperation. Cook asks for a supervisor, while they wait they both try to make small talk. Cook asks Torres what juvenile facility he was in, he responds then he asks what is the problem with her and Sergeant Montgomery. Cook says no deal at all. Torres says clearly there is because back at the encampment you gave him a signal that he clearly ignored. He asked was he the boss on her tact team that bumped her back down to patrol? Cook makes it clear she does not want to discuss Montgomery. Cooks says all of Montgomery’s issues are with him not her. Another officer comes out and asks if she can help them. Cook gives them the breakdown on the information that they need. She immediately says she doesn’t know wha5 she can say, but gives Cook a look. Cook says I know you know something, I’m not trying to get you into trouble but the girl could be in trouble. They know she isn’t a resident, but the6 need help locating her. The officer says quietly that she isn’t a resident, and has never been a resident. She says that it is the daytime warden's daughter and her name is Willow.

Torres and Cook fill Voight in on what they learned back at the precinct. Willow Hughes age thirteen the daughter of Raymond Hughes was at the Kirkland juvenile center until two weeks ago. The stor6 is he went off for better opportunities, but he was quietly let go. The center says he was mentally and physically abusive to the kids in the center. Lucy and Jess were in the facility and when Willow came with her father all three girls became friends and told each other everything. There is a report that shows that Jess was being physically abused by her uncle, Lucy’s mother’s boyfriend touched her and that Willow's dad liked to use his belt and it got worse once he was fired. They discussed everything on social media. They discussed it all and said what they would do to the men abusing them. It seems there was a plan, they killed Liam first, Raymond was second and they lured him into the woods but something went wrong. Raymond killed Lucy instead. Raymond and Willow's phone signals were in the woods before Lucy died. No sign of Raymond or Willow. The home seems empty, there are no cell signals for either, no sign of his car he has a registered Nissan Altima. Ruzek says he put bolos out for both of them. Voight says Raymond could be out looking for Willow and the problem is what will he do to her once he finds her. Voight says they have to find Willow and says they need to take a crack at Jess with the new information that they have. Cook steps up and asks if she can try to talk to Jess.

Cook is in interrogation with Jess. Cook tries to appeal to Jess, but Jess is still so angry. Jess tells her she isn’t scared of her, but Cook should be scared of Jess. At that point Cook gets real with Jess and tells her they don’t know where Raymond is and that Willow could still be in danger. She says what do you think is going to happen to Willow if Raymond gets to her first. Jess says stop, Cook says he is faster and stronger than Willow, she says stop again. Cook says that’s what happened in the woods didn’t it. You guys tried to take him out but he bashed Lucy’s head in twice and you guys probably didn’t even realize what had happened. Jess breaks down and says they were just gonna run to California and that Willow may be in a bus. Torres and Voight were listening in on the conversation from the other room and heard everything that Jess said.

The storm is still raging. Torres and Cook have their eyes peeled for Willow. They are not finding Willow and no one in the staff has seen her. Cook says she wants to look again. They spot Raymond’s Nissan. Torres calls it in. Voight says he is on his way. Torres checks the veno sign of Raymond. Cook looks at the bus line and spits Willow. Cook calls Torres then Willow can see them, but Raymond shows up as well. They are calling Willow’s name while in pursuit. Raymond is chasing Willow and Torres and Cook are chasing Raymond. They radio the team to be on the lookout because they lost eyes. Torress hears screams in an abandoned home. Torres lets the team know he and Cook are going in. They split up trying to check the home. Cook goes into the flooded basement. When she gets to the bottom Raymond rises from the water and attacks Cook. Being caught by surprise she dropped her gun. Raymond is going in on her trying to drown her, beating her, Cook is holding her own. She spots Willow under the water. Cook is trying to get to her not caring that Raymond is trying to drown her. Torres comes down and can see her struggle. Cook fights her way up and screams that Willow is under the water. Torres goes to Willow and is able to get her breathing while Cook gets the best of Raymond and is able to subdue him.

Clearing the scene Torres tells Cook Raymond is on his way to precinct twenty one and Willow is stable. Cook asks will the charges stand for the girls, he says yes. Cook says she better get back to her district. Torres again asks what's up with you and Montgomery. Cook says you just don’t let things go. He says he wants to know and he thinks he can help. Cook asks if he is trying to save her? And does he not think she hasn’t tried to save herself. Cook says he put the brakes on her. She says he arrived wanting to search and guarantee arrest. When she spoke up and said that is not what the tact team was about she found herself reassigned to patrol the next day. Cook says she will see him around and he says there is a spot open on their unit and she should join. Cook says I’m sure it doesn’t work like that. Torres says it can. She says no one is going to sign off on her joining the team. Torres says Voight has already agreed the spot is hers if she wants it. Cooks says why, you don’t know me. He says I know enough and puts his hand out for her to shake. Cook leans in and fades to black.

Cook seems like a great addition to the team. We have seen her with Ruzek, and Torres now and they all play off each other well. Cook was strong in the interrogation room with Jess and held her own fighting Raymond. The addition of Kiana Cook has me intrigued and I can’t wait to see more.
