Chicago PD Season 12 Episode 7: Contrition Review

In tonight's Chicago PD episode, Torres finds himself facing the repercussions of a dangerous and long-hidden secret. Years ago, he had an affair with Gloria Perez, a former criminal informant. But it wasn’t just a fling.  Torres crossed many lines for her, even helping her kill her husband to take control of his drug business. Now, with Gloria reappearing in the picture, Torres is haunted by the fear that this part of his past could come to light, especially as his boss, Voight, has no idea what he's been involved in. The only person who knows the truth is Burgess, and she's been holding onto the secret, knowing that exposing it could ruin both their careers.

The episode kicks off with a murder linked to the drug trade in a neighborhood that’s seen a spike in violence. At first, Intelligence suspects Hector Gazano, a local restaurant owner, of taking over the territory. However, when Cook goes undercover at the restaurant to investigate, she discovers Gloria is deeply involved. Gloria is not just an associate; she’s the one running the whole operation, calling the shots for the cartel, and is clearly more dangerous than Torres ever imagined.

As Cook digs deeper, she unknowingly gets closer to uncovering Torres’ secret. Gloria, sharp and calculating, eventually realizes that Cook is a cop. Just as she’s about to expose Torres’ past, Burgess cuts the audio feed, saving Torres’ secret, but Cook is left in the dark, only to feel betrayed by Torres when she learns the truth. Torres has put her life at risk by withholding the information, and Cook is furious. What hurt most wasn’t just the lie, but the fact that she was put in danger without even knowing why.

This revelation changes everything for Cook. She had been starting to trust Torres, maybe even seeing a possible connection between them, but now she feels completely betrayed. She can’t understand why he would keep such an important part of his life hidden, especially given the bond they’ve started to form. Cook is shaken, not just because of the betrayal but because of the very real danger she now faces and it's all because Torres didn't trust her enough to be honest from the start. She realizes she could’ve died in that situation, all because Torres was too afraid to tell her the truth.

The episode ends on a cliffhanger, with Gloria abducting Cook after the undercover operation goes sideways. Torres, now more than ever, is caught in the web of his own past mistakes. He’s done too much for Gloria, and now it’s threatening his future with both the job and his relationships. For Cook, the hurt and mistrust are palpable. The trust they built is shattered, and Torres is left with the weight of his decision and the reality that he may lose both his career and the person he had begun to grow close to.

The stakes couldn’t be higher for Torres. His past is crashing into his present, and the people closest to him are starting to pay the price. The episode leaves a major question hanging in the air: Can Torres repair the damage he’s caused, or has his past finally caught up with him?
