The Disney Treasure, the newest addition to the Disney Cruise Line fleet, is already living up to its adventurous theme. Recently, while traveling from Europe to the United States in preparation for its maiden voyage, the ship found itself in a real-life rescue mission straight out of an adventure movie.
According to ABC News, the Treasure rescued four people from a sinking 50-foot catamaran, the Serenity, off the coast of Bermuda this past weekend. The incident began when a gasket failure in the vessel's escape hatch caused the boat to take on water, putting its passengers in immediate danger. The Serenity sent out an SOS signal, which was picked up by the U.S. Coast Guard and relayed to nearby ships.
At the time, the Treasure was approximately 80 miles away, making its way from Eemshaven, Netherlands, to Port Canaveral, Florida. Without hesitation, the Treasure deployed one of its small boats to rescue the four people aboard the stricken catamaran.
Captain Marco Nogara of the Disney Treasure shared his thoughts on the dramatic rescue, telling ABC News, “We are pleased that the Disney Treasure was able to provide aid to the boat passengers in peril. Our crew members worked together on the rescue, skillfully demonstrating their training and commitment to safety.”
Disney CEO Bob Iger also took to Instagram to commend the crew, sharing a photo of the Treasure alongside an image of the rescue in action. His caption read,
The Treasure, which is themed around adventure with a grand atrium inspired by Aladdin, has now proven that it's not just a ship for fun and fantasy, but also one that’s ready to spring into action when needed.
