'Doc' Season 1 Episode 2 "...Try Try Again" Review

Doc Season 1, Episode 2 offers an improvement over the first episode by providing deeper insights into the characters, the hospital environment, and the theme of redemption. The episode raises the question of whether Amy is worthy of redemption, a question that could apply to anyone grappling with personal struggles and past mistakes.

Amy’s situation is complex, having lost 8 years of her life and now trying to navigate the changes around her. Confronting the emotional weight of those lost years is a significant challenge, and while Amy is owed answers, it's clear that no one is obligated to share their peace with her. Everyone handles their own grief differently, and revisiting painful memories may not be something others are ready to do.

Amy’s identity is rooted in her career as a doctor. While she may not remember the recent advancements in medicine, she still retains the foundational skills and instincts to diagnose. However, within the hospital, she is viewed as a liability. To those around her, whether they care for her or not, she remains a mystery, and her strong drive can sometimes be a source of conflict.

Hospital roommates can be an added stressor, as the uncertainty of how one will get along with the person sharing the space can exacerbate an already difficult situation. For Amy, her new roommate, Simone, presents an opportunity for both companionship and medical intrigue. When Simone’s condition flares up, Amy diagnoses Lupus, impressing Dr. Heller. Although Heller cares for Amy, he tries to caution her to stay out of the situation, but ultimately, he listens to her input. His feelings for Amy complicate his professional judgment, which will be an ongoing challenge for him.

Simone’s daughter, Grace, struggles with regret over the time lost with her mother. She wishes she could undo the years of resentment and make up for the lost moments. For Amy, this episode presents two important lessons: the importance of giving time and understanding that her daughter, Katie, needs space. The hospital setting, as a place where people feel vulnerable, makes it clear that both Amy and Grace require time to process their situations.

Amy’s mistake with Simone lands her in the ICU, with Dr. Heller shouldering the blame. Dr. Miller, now concerned about Amy’s potential impact on his career, works to undermine her. He fears that Amy might uncover details about the operating room incident, so he attempts to derail her return to the hospital.

Amy’s anger appears to stem from both her frustration with the situation and the personal losses she’s experienced, including her son and her marriage. Her best friend, Gina, plays a pivotal role in setting boundaries with Amy, refusing to intervene in her interactions with Michael. Gina’s willingness to challenge Amy reflects her commitment to Amy’s well-being.

The episode takes an unexpected turn when Amy is discharged from the hospital sooner than anticipated. While this may seem abrupt, it allows Amy to face the reality of who she has become and begin the process of change. The scene where Amy looks at her apartment demonstrates her struggle to reconcile with her past self. However, Amy decides to return to the hospital to assist her roommate, Simone, signaling her shift in focus from herself to others. Despite Grace’s distrust, Amy moves forward, eventually saving Simone through the treatment plan she suggests with Dr. Heller.

The most significant moment of the episode occurs in the final scene between Amy and Michael. Despite their divorce, their connection is evident as Amy admits her regret for not listening to him and expresses her intention to wait for Katie when she’s ready to talk. This marks a key turning point in their relationship, with Michael seemingly moved by Amy’s words. He is willing to risk his career to help her rebuild, showing that there’s still care between them, even if their past is complicated.

One notable development in the episode is Amy’s newfound patience, particularly in relation to her daughter, Katie. Amy recognizes that she cannot rush the healing process, especially when it comes to their relationship. Katie is not ready to revisit the past, and Amy respects her decision to wait until she is.

Amy is in a difficult position, and while not all characters show her the grace she might need, there are moments where she begins to make progress. Some characters, like Richard and Dr. Miller, remain focused on protecting their own interests, while others, like Gina, continue to challenge Amy to improve.

The dynamics between Amy and Jake also evolve, as both struggle to maintain professionalism while dealing with lingering emotions. Their interactions remain tense and filled with unspoken feelings, and it will be interesting to see how their relationship develops moving forward.
