'Doc' Season 1, Episode 4: "One Small Step" - Review

"One Small Step" had me feeling everything. From the very first scene, I was hooked by the emotional weight of Amy’s journey—this episode really felt like a breakthrough for her. Watching Amy confront who she became after Danny’s death was tough, but it felt necessary, especially considering how much grief has been clouding her decisions up until now. It’s clear that Amy is trying to piece herself back together, and her vulnerability really came through. I think the show does an excellent job of not just showing her as a doctor, but as a person trying to cope with loss while also trying to rebuild the relationships she’s neglected in the process.

The scene where Amy reconnects with her daughter is such a turning point. For me, it wasn’t just about the apology—it was about seeing Amy finally take a step toward healing. She’s always been the strong, compassionate doctor, but in this moment, we see her being a mother again. That felt huge. Her daughter, after all the hurt, is still there, and that made me hopeful for Amy’s ability to restore the parts of her life that were damaged. It's raw and messy, but I love that about the show.

The emotional gut-punch of Michael revealing the truth about Danny’s death was a moment that really stuck with me. It’s one of those moments that takes you by surprise, and I felt so much for both of them in that exchange. It was heartbreaking, but I also think it was a really important piece of Amy's healing process. The fact that Amy apologized to him, too, was so moving—she’s finally understanding the full scope of her grief and its impact on others, and that just added so much depth to her character.

I also loved the dynamic between TJ and Sonya, though I have to admit, I’m a little biased toward TJ’s growth. He’s clearly learning from Amy’s old methods, and in some ways, I think he’s realizing that balancing compassion with professionalism is the key to being a great doctor. I found it touching how he sort of stands by Amy’s side, even when it’s not the easiest choice. It says a lot about his respect for her.

Then there’s Richard. The guy just oozes something shady, doesn’t he? I’m still so intrigued by his secret, and the way he’s slowly sabotaging Amy is starting to feel like a real ticking time bomb. The tension between them is only getting thicker, and I can’t help but wonder when the truth is going to explode.

In terms of Amy’s growth as a doctor, I really feel like she’s on the cusp of something. The discovery with the Alzheimer’s patient was a nice callback to her old self but also her new self and her ability to connect with people on a deeply human level. It reminded me of why I was drawn to her character in the first place: she genuinely cares. Sure, she’s been a little lost, but she’s starting to find herself again, and that’s been an incredible thing to witness.

All in all, this episode is definitely one of my favorites so far. The mix of personal and professional stakes made it feel so rich, and I’m really invested in Amy’s journey. I can’t wait to see how the rest of her arc unfolds, especially with all the emotional and professional challenges still ahead. It’s a show that constantly makes me reflect on grief, healing, and the complexities of being a good person in the face of hardship—and that’s what keeps me coming back for more.
