'Doc' Season 1 Episode 8 "Man Plans" Review

In Doc Season 1, Episode 8, titled "Man Plans," the episode plays into a rom-com set in the hospital, making it a perfect fit for a Valentine’s Day-themed story (weeks late). Jake’s patient, a man recovering from a fall, has big plans to attend his 10-year high school reunion. His mission? To finally tell the girl who got away how he feels. (Seriously, does anyone get excited about high school reunions anymore?) She had moved to London to become an attorney, got divorced, and is now returning home. He’s been holding onto the memory of a story she wrote about him back in high school, thinking it was about him and holding onto it ever since. He wants a chance to confess his feelings to her. But, of course, the plot thickens. His BFF, who’s secretly been in love with him all these years, is by his side at the hospital, and Jake’s forced to watch the whole situation play out. It’s a classic love triangle, but with a twist: the girl who’s been in love with the patient for years is the one who wrote the story, not the girl he’s been pining for.

Jake, meanwhile, is dealing with his own relationship issues. Watching this whole scenario unfold makes him question his relationship with Amy, especially after Michael catches them together in the morning and confronts Jake about it. I appreciated that Jake immediately told Amy what was said to Michael and how Amy, in turn, defended their relationship. It’s a nice moment of openness between them. Clearly, Michael’s unresolved feelings for Amy are clouding his judgment, and he’s acting out more as a jealous ex than a hospital administrator. By the end of the patient’s story, as mentioned, it’s revealed that the girl he was so smitten with didn’t write the story about him after all—it was his BFF who had been in love with him all this time. After this revelation, the patient leaves the hospital with the right woman, proving that sometimes, our plans don’t unfold the way we expect. Leading to "Mans Plans". It’s a great reminder that life has a way of surprising us, even in love.

On the flip side, the A-story delves deeper into Amy’s professional life. She’s working with Richard, a character I’ve considered the series’ villain since the beginning. But this episode starts to make me question that assumption. Through some clever flashbacks, we learn more about Amy and Richard’s pre-accident friendship, showing how close they once were before everything fell apart after the death of Amy’s son. Richard, who has often been harsh and antagonistic toward Amy, takes on a more compassionate role in this episode. He’s kinder toward her as they deal with a patient who has an incurable disease, and it’s clear he’s seeing the new, stronger version of Amy. In a surprising twist, Richard even recommends Amy for reinstatement as a doctor after she passes her boards (though there’s a brief moment where Amy doubts her success, as does the audience because, well, this is a drama, after all). For a second, I found myself liking Richard—he plays it cool when Amy tells him about her and Jake, showing that he’s truly moved on from their past.

But just as things seem to be improving for Amy, there’s a looming threat: she finds a draft email with the subject “Dixon” (anyone else automatically think of Daryl - but I digress) and asks a nurse to look into it. This could be the start of her uncovering the dark truth—the malpractice committed on Richard’s part. If this is true, all the progress Amy has made in rebuilding her relationship with Richard could come crashing down. The tension here is palpable, as it’s clear that while Richard’s been kinder, the skeletons in his closet will undo everything.

The episode wraps up with a shocking and emotional moment: Michael visits Amy at home, and in a vulnerable scene, he admits that he misses her and struggles with her moving on. It’s a beautifully played moment, showing the rawness of their past relationship. However, they both make it clear thru unspoken words that while Michael’s feelings are valid, she has moved on—she’s with Jake now, and he’s married with a baby on the way. They have a heartfelt conversation more so articulated with looks than words and reach an understanding, agreeing that while their romantic relationship has ended, they can perhaps still remain friends. (At least that is what I got out of the scene.) This scene marks a significant turning point for both of them, allowing them to move forward while acknowledging the depth of what they once shared.

All in all, this was another great episode of Doc, combining both heartwarming and tense moments. It skillfully balanced the romantic drama with the more intense professional storylines, leaving viewers eagerly anticipating what will happen next for Amy, Jake, and the rest of the crew.
