'Doctor Odyssey' Season 1 Episode 10 "Shark Attack! Part 2: Orca!" Review

Writer: AllexusAllexus

Chaos heightens during part two of Doctor Odyssey’s midseason premiere. When viewers last saw Captain Massey and his crew, they were struggling to deal with a catastrophic ship shutdown caused by a great white shark colliding with the propeller. This week it’s all about the orcas, featuring thrilling twists and even bigger obstacles.

The episode, titled “Shark Attack Part 2: Orca,” began with Avery providing flashlights to Max and Brooke so they could see while performing Spencer’s surgery. They find some relief when Spencer’s pulse is returned. Tristan also calls for help with Josie, whom he found unresponsive at the end of part one.

Massey announces that the Odyssey can’t move, and they can’t send a distress signal, then he hears a strange sound… the orcas. Max says that they must get Spencer, Josie and Brody on a tender, but Massey explains that even an orca’s tail can bring it down. As a deterrent, Massey, Rosie and Ray decided to use sandbags to make them swim away.

Brooke is grateful that Tristan is able to stabilize Josie and Brody, and she gushes about how lucky Max and the Odyssey are to have him. She also apologizes for blasting him about Ray.

Back in the infirmary, Tristan and Avery explain to Spencer that he is in dire need of care at an actual hospital, but he asserts that he is not leaving his post.

Rosie and Ray realize the scraping sound is over, meaning that the orcas are gone. Rosie calls for the tender so Josie and Brody can be moved to a hospital. Brooke and Avery get prepared to get on the tender and Brooke and Max share some flirty banter and a goodbye. Tristan then calls Max out for wanting to have his cake and eat it too, which doesn’t go over well.

On the tender, Brooke tries to get some intel about Avery’s situation with Max and Tristan, but the subject swiftly changes to medical school. Brooke gives Avery some advice when it comes to speaking up and building productive relationships with professors to soak up knowledge.

Before Brooke and Avery can continue their conversation, Ray halts the tender when he hears the original pod of orcas squealing and swimming towards them. One even leaps, splashing water on them. Avery immediately calls for Captain Massey on the walkie, and he tells her the Odyssey is going to launch the sound cannons.

Avery jumps into action, putting cotton in everyone’s ears to block the sound. It was a great call. The orcas disappeared, and Ray, Brooke, Avery, Josie and Brody were all able to get back on the Odyssey. However, as soon as they get into the infirmary, Massey alerts Max that they have 90 minutes before they hit a reef.

Things get worse when Avery realizes that Spencer is gone. She and Tristan go looking for him. They find him attempting to go back up to the bridge. They remind him that he just got out of surgery and help him back to the infirmary.

When Brooke shares stories about her dad and how he taught her mechanics, Max gets to know her better. They also gorge on snacks left from the mini fridges which Brooke uses.

One of the episode’s best moments is when Tristan helps Spencer by getting him back on the bridge, allowing Massey to put him to work. This gesture meant a lot to Spencer, and he showed his gratitude. It also impacts Avery, so much so that she kisses Tristan.

Josie’s situation worsens by infection. Without any power, the only way to check her is to open her up, which is what Max decides. In a sweet moment, Josie asks Brody to marry her before her surgery.

With a hail mary, Rosie restores the power, and everything gets back in business. What better way to cap off this tumultuous adventure than with fireworks, which Captain Massey sets off to prevent any more orcas from following the ship.

The episode ends with Josie and Brody tying the knot, Ray and Brooke leaving, and Massey telling Spencer how proud his dad would’ve been of him.

Casino week kicks off next when the one and only Angela Bassett climbs aboard the Odyssey for a bombshell 9-1-1 crossover event. Emphasis on bomb. The crew must find their way out of danger and fast. Episode 11 will air Thursday, March 20, on ABC. It will also stream on Hulu the next day.
