Fire Country Season 3, Episode 9 ("Coming in Hot") is a high-stakes episode that takes us straight back into the fire, both literally and emotionally. Picking up from the winter finale’s cliffhanger, we see Bode (Max Thieriot) and Audrey (Levin Rambin) stuck in a pool while flames rage around them, and Gabriela (Stephanie Arcila) finds herself in a dangerous situation after walking off the job in the heat of a fight with Jake (Jordan Calloway). Meanwhile, Eve (Jules Latimer) and Vince (Billy Burke) fight to save her family’s farm from the spreading wildfire. The team faces constant danger, but it’s the emotional battles that steal the show in this episode.
First, let’s talk about Gabriela. Her storyline has been a whirlwind of self-sabotage all season, and it’s refreshing (and kind of relieving) to see her hit a point where she finally realizes she needs to turn things around. After her emotional breakdown with Manny (Kevin Alejandro), we get the sense that she’s truly beginning to reckon with her choices. Watching Gabriela unravel, especially in her interactions with her father, has been difficult — she’s been so stubborn and resistant to change, but here, we see a glimmer of the Gabriela we used to love. Manny’s unwavering support, despite everything, really showcases the depth of his love for her, even when she’s lashing out. It’s one of those moments where you just want to hug Manny, because he’s been such a rock for her. I’m glad that Gabriela is finally starting to wake up, but I do wonder how long it’ll take for her to really change and take responsibility for her actions. It’s going to be a tough road, but if this episode is any indication, there’s hope.
Then there’s Bode and Audrey, whose dynamic is starting to shift. Bode’s hero moment with Audrey in the pool was classic Bode — always jumping into the fray to save others. But what I really loved was how he didn’t hesitate to send Audrey to the hospital when she clearly needed it. Even though Audrey was upset at first, Bode’s instincts were spot on, and it’s nice to see him proving himself, not just as a firefighter but as someone who’s learning to make the right calls, even when they’re tough.
The moment between Bode, Audrey, and Gabriela at the hospital was awkward, but in a way that felt true to the situation. Bode’s feelings for Audrey are clearly growing, and I’m curious to see where they go from here. It’s clear he’s finally moving on from Gabriela, but I still think there’s some unfinished business there. Gabriela’s comment about the flowers was both hilarious and heart-wrenching, though, because it made me realize how much emotional baggage is still between these two. Watching Bode and Audrey’s relationship develop will be interesting, especially since they both have some baggage to work through — Audrey with her first shift and Bode with his tangled past with Gabriela.
As for Eve and her relationship with her father, that was a genuinely emotional arc for me. The whole situation with her father has been complicated, and watching Eve struggle to prove herself while also navigating her family’s issues has been tough. But in this episode, we finally see a glimmer of hope when her father helps rescue the team by offering the horses they need to escape the fire. It was a small but significant gesture, and it showed that there’s a possibility for healing in their relationship. I really felt for Eve in this moment, because after everything she’s been through with her family, this was the first sign that they might be able to rebuild something, even if it’s just a small step. It’s also clear that Eve is fiercely protective of her family, and her determination to save the farm and the horses proved that she’s ready to do whatever it takes, even if her father doesn’t fully understand her commitment yet.
And then there’s the cliffhanger with Vince (Billy Burke) and Sharon (Diane Farr). Just when they think they’ve made it through the fire, literally and figuratively, they’re confronted with a whole new issue — Vince’s estranged father, Walter (Jeff Fahey), showing up a week late for Bode’s graduation. This threw me for a loop, because it’s clear that there’s something more going on here. Did Walter forget? Did Vince and Sharon leave him out intentionally? Either way, the tension is palpable, and I’m really curious to see what’s going on with Walter. These poor parents just can’t catch a break. I’m hoping that whatever’s going on with Walter doesn’t further strain Vince and Sharon’s already complicated relationship, but I have a feeling that this storyline is about to get a lot messier.
Overall, this episode brought a lot of personal growth and emotional breakthroughs, and I’m really invested in where each character’s story is headed. Gabriela is finally on the path to redemption, Bode is figuring out his feelings (even if it's painful), and Eve is starting to repair her fractured family dynamic. But as we see with Vince and Sharon, just when you think things are looking up, a new obstacle arises. I’m excited to see how these characters continue to evolve and how the fire continues to serve as a metaphor for both destruction and rebirth in their lives.
