‘Friday Night Lights’ Reboot in Development at Universal TV

A reboot of the beloved football drama Friday Night Lights is officially in the works at Universal Television, Deadline has confirmed. The new iteration is expected to explore fresh storylines within the world of high school football, featuring an entirely new cast of characters.

The reboot is being developed by the original series' key creative forces—Jason Katims, Pete Berg, and Brian Grazer—and is still in the early stages of development. While details about the plot are scarce, it’s understood that this project will introduce a new generation of characters, distancing itself from the original ensemble that included stars like Kyle Chandler, Connie Britton, Taylor Kitsch, and Jesse Plemons.

The Friday Night Lights franchise, which originally concluded its five-season run in 2011, has long been a candidate for revival. Based on H.G. Bissinger's 1990 book and the 2004 film adaptation, the series captured the spirit of a high school football team in the fictional town of Dillon, Texas. At the heart of the show was Coach Eric Taylor (played by Chandler) and his wife, Tammy (Britton), as they navigated the challenges of coaching a team in a town obsessed with football.

The original series launched on NBC in 2006 and ran for two seasons before striking a partnership with DirecTV, which co-produced the final three seasons.

These episodes aired on DirecTV's The 101 Network before making their way to NBC. The show also starred Minka Kelly, Adrianne Palicki, Jurnee Smollett, Michael B. Jordan, and Matt Lauria, among others. It was produced by Universal Television, Imagine Television, and Film 44.

Talk of a Friday Night Lights reboot has been circulating for years, but this marks the first official confirmation of a new project. With the team behind the original series returning to shape the new version, fans of the iconic show are eagerly awaiting what the next chapter might bring.
