On February 26, 2025, the world learned of the passing of legendary actor Gene Hackman at the age of 95, alongside the heartbreaking news of the death of his wife, Betsy Arakawa. The couple was found dead in their Santa Fe, New Mexico, home, and new details about their causes of death have now been revealed.

Gene Hackman, known for his powerful performances in films like The French Connection, The Royal Tenenbaums, and Unforgiven, passed away after a long battle with health issues. According to a statement from the Santa Fe County medical examiner, Hackman’s death was attributed to natural causes, with complications from heart disease and advanced Alzheimer’s disease playing a significant role. Hackman had been living with Alzheimer’s for some time, and this condition likely left him unaware of the passing of his beloved wife just days earlier. His decline had been noticeable in recent years, though his impressive career in Hollywood continues to resonate with audiences worldwide.

Betsy Arakawa, a talented concert pianist and Hackman’s wife for over 30 years, died just a week before her husband. Authorities confirmed that Arakawa’s death was due to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a rare and serious illness that is transmitted through contact with the urine, saliva, or feces of infected rodents. While the condition is rare, its symptoms can include fever, fatigue, and difficulty breathing, and it can be fatal without prompt medical attention.

The fact that the couple both passed away within such a short timeframe has shocked their friends and family. While Hackman’s condition had been declining over time, Arakawa’s sudden death was unexpected, and the tragedy was compounded by the proximity of their deaths.

In an additional layer of sorrow, Hackman and Arakawa’s dog, Zinna, was also found dead in the home. No signs of external trauma were found, and authorities have ruled out foul play in the deaths of all three. It is believed that the couple's dog may have also suffered from complications stemming from the hantavirus exposure.

Gene Hackman’s passing marks the end of a remarkable career in film. Over his decades-long career, Hackman became known for his versatility and gravitas, often portraying characters that were as flawed as they were compelling. His two Academy Awards, several nominations, and memorable roles in both dramas and action films have cemented his legacy as one of the greatest actors of his generation.

In his personal life, Hackman had often kept a low profile, choosing a peaceful life away from the spotlight with his wife, Betsy, whom he married in 1991. Arakawa, a talented musician and lover of the arts, stood by him through his retirement from acting, as Hackman chose to focus on writing novels.

The couple's tragic deaths, particularly the fact that they both passed away within such a short window, serve as a reminder of the fleeting nature of life. For those who knew Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa, their lives were marked by quiet devotion to each other and a shared love of creativity. Hackman’s passing concludes a long and storied career, while Arakawa’s untimely death raises awareness about the dangers of rare diseases like hantavirus pulmonary syndrome.

Hackman’s admirers and family members will undoubtedly continue to honor the legacy he built both on-screen and in his personal life. Though their deaths were shrouded in sorrow, their time together remains a testament to the strength of their relationship and their enduring impact on those around them.
