High Potential Season 1 Episode 7 Recap: “One of Us” (Fall Finale)
ABC’s High Potential wraps up its fall season with a tense and action-packed episode titled “One of Us.” The episode centers around Yes Day, a quirky tradition where Morgan (Kaitlin Olson) must say "yes" to all of Ava’s (Amirah J) plans for the day. One of the activities involves visiting Morgan’s workplace at the LAPD, where things quickly spiral into chaos.
While at the station, Morgan and Ava encounter Tom (JD Pardo), who jokingly reveals that a number on the window written in orange chip dust was illegible, leading to him accidentally calling an elderly woman. As Ava tours the station, she’s shocked to discover that her mom doesn’t have a desk like the other officers.
But the real drama begins when, during a bathroom break, a woman takes Lt. Melon (Garret Dillahunt) hostage and claims there’s a bomb in the building, along with others hidden throughout the station. She and her accomplice quickly disarm an officer, demand everyone’s phones and weapons, and order Detective Daphne Forrester (Javicia Leslie) to evacuate the building, leaving only the people in the room behind.
The hostage takers, later identified as Army Staff Sergeant Brooke Kirkman and Sergeant Jeremy Davis, claim they are there to free an innocent man, Staff Sergeant Logan Hanson, who was wrongly convicted of murder. They demand that the LAPD find the real killer, or no one will leave alive. The tension escalates as Lt. Melon insists that he is the best detective, but Daphne and Morgan exchange skeptical glances.
Meanwhile, Lt. Selena Solo (Judy Reyes) and her team—Detectives Adam Karadec (Daniel Sunjata), Oz Osman (Deniz Akdeniz), and others—work to track the hostage situation from outside. Selena suspects there are about a dozen people, mostly Major Crimes personnel, being held hostage. SWAT is in position, but the hostage takers are proving difficult to negotiate with. They claim that Logan is innocent, and if the LAPD doesn’t make things right, the hostages will die.
A critical lead comes when Detective Lavallee (guest star) reveals details about the case. Logan is locked up, with the DA expecting a 25-to-life sentence for the murder of Frank Webber, a retired Master Sergeant. Evidence, including a gun with Logan’s fingerprints and traces of acetone, seem to point to Logan as the killer. But there are holes in the case. Morgan believes something’s missing—specifically, a piece of paper that was moved from the crime scene, leading her to call Adam (Mekki Leeper) for help.
As Adam investigates, Morgan starts to piece together the mystery. She discovers Frank’s last printed document—a military form that points to a potential connection between Frank and Logan’s case. The investigation takes a turn when it’s revealed that Frank had been involved with someone who may have been doing drugs, which could explain his late-night visit to a detox center shortly before his death. As the pieces fall into place, the focus shifts to a possible new suspect: Ben Spoelstra, a soldier Frank had been training.
The hostage situation grows more tense when Brooke and Jeremy begin to unravel emotionally, with Jeremy particularly convinced that the police are lying to him. Meanwhile, Tom is critically injured, and the clock is ticking as Morgan works to keep him alive while also continuing the investigation. With time running out, Morgan realizes that Frank had secretly placed an AirTag on the soldier he suspected was involved in drug activity. The AirTag leads the team to Ben’s house, where they discover drugs and the tag. Ben is arrested, and it seems like the case is solved.
However, Jeremy, still furious at being deceived, tries to blow up the building, threatening to detonate a bomb. Morgan, thinking quickly, deduces that the bomb is a bluff. Brooke had been pretending to build the bomb as a distraction, and once this is revealed, Jeremy’s grip on the situation loosens. As SWAT moves in, Daphne and Morgan are able to disarm Jeremy, and the hostages are freed.
In the aftermath, Morgan reunites with Ava outside, reassuring her daughter that she’s okay and promising a rain check for Yes Day. While the situation ends with Logan being exonerated, Morgan still holds a grudge against Brooke for putting Ava in danger. As the episode concludes, Morgan finds herself finally earning her own desk at the LAPD, a small but significant victory after a tense day.
The fall finale wraps up with a note of humor, as Morgan is still greeted with applause at work the next day, though Lt. Melon remains stubbornly neutral. The episode closes with Morgan admitting to Adam that she might never sit at her own desk, but for now, it’s clear she’s earned her place in the department—and, perhaps more importantly, the respect of her colleagues.
