Episode 8, is the season finale of ‘How to Die Alone’ was something. After Melissa speaks on others living their life to the fullest which is something she has struggled to do, we pan to Melissa at the airport waiting to board her flight for Alex’s nuptials. Yes, it appears that even after the love confession to Alex that left her dejected she still plans to attend the wedding. Soon, it is announced that the flight is boarding as Rory walks up and spots Melissa. There is a moment of hesitation between the two friends who still have not cleared the air since their disagreement. Rory takes a seat and there is a moment of awkward conversation between them. Until Melissa reveals she told Alex her true feelings for him, and like that it appears that the friendship is back on track, Melissa even meets Ben before they board the flight.
Melissa continues to be conflicted about whether she should go to the wedding. As she sits mulling over whether she should go, the flight attendant continues to announce vouchers. Finally, Melissa decides to trade in her 1st class ticket for layovers and connecting flights. This appears to be a step forward for Melissa, she is making a decision that is in her best interest. As she makes her way to her new flight, she sees her former self at the baggage cart smoking, this signifies change and growth. Melissa boards the flight and mentions that this is different from the stimulation. She meets a lovely older couple, who help her settle in and make her comfortable. As they are flying, they encounter turbulence which terrifies Melissa, especially after seeing one flight attendant looking horrified. After the turbulence has ceased, it is explained that the birds caused the commotion. Melissa is still shaken until another flight attendant comforts her explaining that the other flight attendant has a “resting scared face” and proceeds to gift her with first-time flyer wings for making it through.
After landing safely, Melissa's first action is to reach out to Terrance. She sends a picture showing that she landed in Charlotte. Terrance calls Melissa to inquire how she made it to Charlotte and not Hawaii. Terrance also congratulates Melissa on her first successful flight. As Melissa heads to her next flight she sees the statement “Do one thing that scares” with that she changes her flight.
Melissa makes it safely to Chicago and visits a diner that was featured in Elise’s photo. While at the diner, she meets the owner who also had a relationship with Elise. During this conversation, Melissa confides that she has a confession and states committed fraud. The owner states he will forget about it if he can keep the picture of Elise. He also spoke to Melissa about living her life to the fullest, which she does for the rest of her Chicago trip even engaging in Wintertime Plunge at Michigan Lake. As she posts on social media, we can see those who love her are happy to see her enjoying herself and doing something she would not normally do.
Melissa arrives at the airport and meets Angie another airport cart driver. It appears some qualities of Angie resonate with her. She encourages her and boards her flight to go back to JFK. While waiting for the flight to take off, she receives an email from the furniture company stating that she will receive a settlement of 17,000. Life appears to be looking up for Melissa! But maybe not her brother, she leaves a voice message for Brian informing him of her windfall and jokes about him cheating on his wife. Unfortunately for Brian, he listens to this message in the car with his wife who overhears everything!
Once she lands, Terrance is waiting for her, just as they are walking towards each other to hug and maybe possibly a kiss, she is tackled and arrested for fraud and grand larceny!
What a way to end their season!
