Jackpot! Review: Cena and Awkwafina Tried Something

Screenwriter Rob Yescombe pays tribute to the iconic international action comedy star Jackie Chan in a new venture from video game writer-designer to the big screen. However, this high-energy concoction falls short without Chan's presence to bring it to life, lacking the necessary credibility to captivate us with its outlandish premise.

The story unfolds in a dystopian Los Angeles (actually Atlanta) in 2026, where the narrative centers around the Grand Lottery, a deadly competition promising riches to the survivor while endangering the winner's life. The plot resembles a comedic version of the Purge, with protagonist Seann William Scott fighting for survival until an unexpected twist leads to a new winner.

Fast forward to 2030, and the dangerous game continues with former child star Katie, portrayed by Awkwafina, unexpectedly becoming the next target. As the chaos ensues, Katie must navigate through perilous situations, including encounters with ruthless adversaries and unexpected allies like Noel (John Cena) and Louis Lewis (Simu Liu).

Directed by Paul Feig, known for his comedic prowess in films like Bridesmaids and Spy, the film struggles to strike a balance between humor and action, leading to a chaotic and exhausting viewing experience. While some moments offer clever touches, the overall execution falls short of expectations.

Despite the efforts of the talented cast, including Awkwafina, Cena, and Liu, the film fails to fully engage viewers, relying heavily on action sequences over character development. While attempting to capture the spirit of classic treasure hunt films, Jackpot! lacks the depth and comedic charm of its predecessors.

Ultimately, Jackpot! may not be worth your time.
