James Houghton, an actor and writer renowned for his work on the iconic soap operas Knots Landing and The Young and the Restless, has passed away at the age of 75. His death was confirmed by his wife, Karen Houghton, after a battle with peritoneal mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer. Houghton’s passing on August 27, 2024 (his wife just recently confirmed his death to media), marks the end of a decades-long career in television that left a lasting impact on both fans and colleagues alike.


Born on November 7, 1948, in Los Angeles, California, Houghton was born into the world of entertainment as the son of Buck Houghton, a producer known for his work on the original Twilight Zone. James quickly found his way to acting, making his television debut in the 1960s in roles on series like Man with a Camera and The Twilight Zone. His early work helped him develop the skills that would carry him through his subsequent career in the soap opera industry.





Houghton’s breakthrough came in 1973 when he joined the cast of The Young and the Restless, portraying the character Greg Foster. He was part of the show’s core cast until 1976, playing a pivotal role in the early years of the show. This role cemented his place in the world of daytime television and helped launch his career as a respected actor.


In 1979, Houghton transitioned to Knots Landing, a spin-off of the wildly popular Dallas. He portrayed Kenny Ward, a character who became integral to the show’s narrative, appearing regularly until 1983. His time on Knots Landing was marked by both emotional storylines and the charm he brought to the role, making him a fan favorite.





Houghton’s contributions to the soap opera world weren’t confined to acting alone. After his acting roles, he also transitioned to writing, most notably for The Young and the Restless. His work behind the scenes was instrumental in shaping the show’s success, and his team won four Daytime Emmy Awards for Best Writing Team.
