Apple TV+ is preparing to revisit Cape Fear through a 10-episode series adaptation featuring Oscar winner Javier Bardem as the criminal Max Cady. Bardem will step into the chilling role previously portrayed by Robert De Niro in Martin Scorsese’s acclaimed 1991 film.
The series will center on the lives of "happily married attorneys Amanda and Steve Bowden" as they face turmoil when Max Cady, a menacing figure from their past, is released from prison. Described as a "tense, Hitchcockian thriller," the show will also explore America’s contemporary fascination with true crime.
Nick Antosca (The Act) will be in charge as the writer and showrunner, with Scorsese—director of the 1991 adaptation—serving as an executive producer. Joining Scorsese in the production team are Steven Spielberg and Bardem himself.
Originally inspired by the novel The Executioners, Cape Fear was first brought to the screen in a 1962 film starring Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum. The tale was rejuvenated in Scorsese’s remake, which featured Nick Nolte, Jessica Lange, De Niro, and Juliette Lewis. De Niro and Lewis both received Oscar nominations for their performances.
Javier Bardem, known for his powerful portrayals, most recently played José Menendez in Netflix’s Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. Bardem’s illustrious filmography includes his Academy Award-winning performance as Anton Chigurh in No Country for Old Men, as well as memorable roles in Skyfall, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, and the Dune series.
This adaptation of Cape Fear assures an enthralling exploration of justice, vengeance, and the enduring psychological impact of past transgressions.
