John Ashton, John Taggart in 'Beverly Hills Cop' Has Passed Away at Age 76

John David Ashton brought a memorable presence to the "Beverly Hills Cop" franchise and made a lasting impact as an actor. His performances as the no-nonsense detective added a lot to the films' dynamic. It's always tough to lose someone who has contributed so much to entertainment.


John died peacefully Thursday in Ft. Collins, Colorado after a battle with cancer.


John David Ashton's role in "Beverly Hills Cop" was pivotal in defining his career. His chemistry with Eddie Murphy created some of the film's most memorable moments, and his portrayal of the no-nonsense detective brought a perfect balance to the comedic elements. Beyond that iconic role, his extensive body of work in film, television, and theater showcases his versatility and talent.


He appeared this year in the latest installment of the franchise streaming on Netflix.


John David Ashton had such a diverse career. His appearances in classics like "MAS*H" and "Some Kind of Wonderful" showcased his range, while "Midnight Run" allowed him to shine alongside Robert De Niro in a memorable action-comedy pairing. Each role contributed to his reputation as a talented character actor.


John's rep Alan Somers tells TMZ, "John leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and service. His memory will forever be treasured by his wife, children, grandchildren, as well as his brother, sisters, his extended family and all who loved him. John’s impact on the world will be remembered and celebrated for generations to come."


The family requests any donations in John’s memory be made to Pathways Hospice Care.
