UPDATE 8/11 10:44am EST: U.S. Olympic officials say they will appeal a ruling that gymnast Jordan Chiles must return the medals she won in Paris.
"We firmly believe that Jordan rightfully earned the bronze medal, and there were critical errors in both the initial scoring by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) and the subsequent CAS appeal process that need to be addressed," the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee statement said.
UPDATE 8/11 8:33am EST: The IOC has said U.S. gymnast Jordan Chiles will have to return her bronze medal from last week's floor final after the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled her appeal against her score, which saw her bumped up from fifth to third, was invalid.
BREAKING: An Olympic court has overturned Jordan Chiles' bronze medal-winning score following a challenge by the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee. The committee contested a late alteration that resulted in Chiles securing the third position.
The Romanian committee claimed that a contentious inquiry from Team USA coaches, conducted after the floor final results, led to an unexpected increase in Chiles' score. They argued that this inquiry was made after the one-minute deadline and should not have been considered.
The International Gymnastics Federation and the Court of Arbitration for Sport determined that the inquiry did indeed occur after the one-minute deadline and decided to annul Chiles' score.
"The inquiry submitted on behalf of Ms. Jordan Chiles in the Final of the women’s Floor exercise was raised after the conclusion of the one-minute deadline provided by article 8.5 of the 2024 FIG Technical Regulations and is determined to be without effect," the ruling states. "The initial score of 13.666 given to Ms. Jordan Chiles in the final of the women’s Floor exercise shall be reinstated."
