Karla Mosley Opens Up About 'Bold and the Beautiful' and 'Beyond the Gates'

Writer: Je-ReeJe-Ree

Karla Mosley is no stranger to daytime television aka soap operas but more commonly referred to as “stories.” She is riding high, enjoying the ultra-success of the new soap opera to launch in years centered around an affluent black family named the Duprees on CBS’ Beyond the Gates.

Beyond the Gates premiered on February 24 and is a ratings hit. Karla plays Dani Dupree, the youngest daughter of Vernon and Anita Dupree, the matriarchs of a gated community in the DC area. Dani is going through a lot with her ex-husband Bill Hamilton leaving her for a much younger woman Hailey Hamilton.

All this drama is not new to Karla as she starred on the Bold and the Beautiful for many years as Maya. During the later years of Karla’s run as Maya the character was rewritten to be transgender. Karla initially was unsure if she would do the role justice. In a recent interview she stated, “When my boss asked me if I would do this story, I first was going to say no because it felt inappropriate for me to play that role as a cis woman. I do identify as queer, but I’m not transgender.”

Mosley remembers the storyline taking place around the same time Caitlyn Jenner transitioned and her friends gave her some advice saying, “if you don’t accept this story, this story won’t be told.” After the conversation with her friends, she continued on Bold and the Beautiful.

According to Mosely, Maya is in her rearview mirror, and she is focused on the historic Beyond the Gates. She said she “would love to play a role with the kind of gravitas and importance that Maya had for sure.” However, she will not play a character that is transgender again out of respect for the community.
