Live-Action 'Rugrats' Movie In the Works

Nickelodeon is bringing one of its most beloved series back to the big screen with a live-action, CGI hybrid Rugrats movie currently in development. According to Deadline, the script is co-written by Mikey Day and Saturday Night Live's Streeter Seidell, with Jason Moore, known for Pitch Perfect, set to direct.

While specific details about the film's format remain under wraps, Variety indicates that the babies will be rendered in CGI but will interact within a "real world" setting.

This new iteration promises to be "unlike any film or show" that has come before it, suggesting an innovative approach to the franchise.

The original Rugrats series debuted in 1991 alongside other iconic Nicktoons like Doug and Ren & Stimpy, following the adventurous lives of toddlers led by the diaper-clad Tommy Pickles. It ran until 2004, producing a total of 172 episodes and spawning a trilogy of films: The Rugrats Movie (1998), Rugrats in Paris (2000), and Rugrats Go Wild (2003), the latter featuring characters from The Wild Thornberrys.

A sequel series, All Grown Up, explored the characters' teenage years and aired from 2003 to 2008.

In 2021, Nickelodeon revived the Rugrats franchise with a CG-animated reboot for Paramount+, but it was later removed during a content purge. Unreleased episodes have since aired on the Nicktoons cable network.

No casting announcements or production timelines have been revealed yet, but excitement is building for this new chapter in the Rugrats legacy!
