Lupita Nyong'o Talks 'The Wild Robot' and Learning How to Go Easy on Herself

A new version of the literary sensation, The Wild Robot by Peter Brown, a beloved, award-winning, and #1 New York Times bestseller, is being brought to life by DreamWorks Animation.

The story of Roz (Lupita Nyong'o) and her journey from a stranded robot to a beloved member of the island’s community is both heartwarming and thought-provoking. Chris Sanders’ return to animation for this project is exciting; his previous work with Lilo & Stitch and How to Train Your Dragon showcases his skill in blending emotional depth with imaginative storytelling.

Roz’s evolution—from feeling out of place to becoming an integral part of the island ecosystem—offers a compelling narrative about adaptation, acceptance, and the power of connection. The dynamic between Roz and the orphaned gosling, Brightbill (Kit Connor), adds a layer of tenderness and highlights themes of family and caregiving.

Given Sanders’ track record and the richness of Peter Brown’s original story, it seems like this adaptation will be both visually stunning and emotionally resonant. It’s a story that explores the intersection of technology and nature, and the journey of finding one's place in an unfamiliar world. This film promises to be a memorable and impactful addition to the world of animated features.

During a press conference held Wednesday morning, in which we were in attendance, Lupita Nyong'o, Chris Sanders and Kris Bowers shared what they hoped audiences take home after watching the film.

Chris Sanders: Well, front and center is the idea that we're at some point going to have to change our programming to accomplish something. I think that we are all creatures of habit, we hate change. You know, I've thought a lot about this. I think that sometimes we're afraid that if we change our programming, we're going to lose ourselves somehow, if that makes sense, and you're not going to. You're going to become a more dimensional being and it's going to be okay. That was something that was built into the book by Peter Brown that we identified and it was a core, load-bearing theme in the story.

Kris Bowers: I'd say all those things and maybe add to that just thanking the people that have sacrificed for you to be here and be who you are. And remembering, whether it's our mothers or whomever else is playing that role, just that there's so much that they are doing for us to be able to thrive in this world. Remember that and remember to thank them and say I love you when it makes sense.

Lupita Nyong'o: I really like the message that kindness is a force. I think oftentimes kindness can be considered a vulnerability. In this film, Roz's journey shows how it is a force and it's a force to reckon with. Also, I would say accepting people who are different than you or others that are different than you and welcoming that into your life.

Lupita added that she, "learned to go easy on herself" after sustaining a voice injury which caused her to be silent for three months. While Chris Sanders wanted to keep the world of The Wild Robot "chaotic and uneven."

If you’re a fan of the book or just enjoy animated adventures with heart and depth, this adaptation should be a must-watch!

The Wild Robot releases in theatres on September 27th.
