Matlock Season 1 Episode 3: "A Guy Named Greg" Recap

Its time to head back to the courtroom and great news: Matlock has been renewed for a season 2 as reported here! During a wrongful termination case, Matty is challenged to put his rusty trial skills to the test when a woman accuses her boss of sexual harassment during "A Guy Named Greg."

During voir dire, Sarah crushes it with her research but Olympia credits all three on her team sending Sarah on a spiral all episode trying to figure out why Olympia doesn't like her. It all ends up being a lesson for Sarah. I really need Sarah to take a chill pill.

Matty has a plan to get into Olympia's phone and its brilliant. She left her phone on in Court and had the ringer on loud which caused the Judge to ban all phones. It almost worked but their client - Alex, a woman who's boss sexually harassed her and then fired her after the holiday party - finds Matty comforting so Olympia wants her in Court.

Everything seems to going well until its cross and Alex lied on the stand, she had a previous relationship and a sex tape that the Judge allows the jury to see. While Billy comes up with a plan to discredit the boss (and we get to meet his adorable family), Olympia decides Julian was right and it time to contact Shae. The firm's jury consultant and expert lie detector, Shae (Yael Grobglas), worries Matty.

After Shae works her magic in Court, she suggests that Matty should try the rest of the case as Olympia lost the jury. Meanwhile David and Sarah learn the boss was convicted a previous crime of forcible touching - this guy is a real winner. During the chaos Matty got Olympia's phone but back at Court the Judge is not letting in the boss' past record but somehow was ok letting in the sex tape (which Matty is having a hard time getting past).

Olympia is back in Court and she sees for herself that she has the lost the jury even though her witness is helping her case. Matty is at the office and is trying to get files off Olympia's computer when she is caught and spills coffee all over it. There is no time to cry over spilled coffee because Olympia needs Matty to try the case.

All hands on deck as Olympia stages a mock trial to help Matlock prepares. As Shae pushes Matty she reveals she believes it was her client's fault because in her generation they just put up with creepy bosses. Alex overhears and is devastated.

What I really love about this show is Olympia and Matty's conversations. The back and forth about we aren't friends, we are friends is great. They have these heartfelt conversations and teach each other so much.

Its time for Matty's big day in Court. She plays the sweet, innocent lawyer and in true original Matlock style - she trips up the defendant. He impeached himself when he said he considered himself a good person and someone who is a criminal would not be a good person. Matty is allowed to mention his past record. A small win.

When its time for her closing - Kathy Bates delivers a heartfelt speech about judging and women's rights at work. She goes into what it was like with her co-worker, who she calls Greg, when she was starting out. First inappropriate comments then he crossed the line and "got fresh with her." Matty hid and changed her whole career to avoid this man. A sad reminder of what women had to go through so women today could climb that ladder at work. Her impassioned closing wins the case for Alex and the jury wants to give her an even bigger payout. That calls for a little dance in the hallway between friends - I mean colleagues.

Also around the office, its not lost on viewers the awkwardness between Olympia, Julian and Elijah. I'm sure I mentioned this in a previous review, while Elijah is great, something about Olympia and Julian that reads unfinished to me.

One last little interaction between Olympia and Shae before she heads back downstairs for the reminder of the season (perhaps we will see her again). She also spills the tea that Julian paid her fee - wonder why that is. Olympia realizes dating Elijah and working with him and her ex probably isn't a good idea and ends the relationship (dang we couldn't get one steamy scene).

We learn more about Billy and he has imposter syndrome. I hope we get a deep dive into his backstory even more as the series progresses. But- we get to the end of the episode twist and Matty switched out Olympia's computer! Her and Alfie find an old voicemail from her deceased father but Matty reminds herself and us that they aren't friends and closes the laptop.

Another great episode of Matlock. It blends real life topics within the legal world. You never know what Matty and her family have up their sleeve and the end of the episode twists keep the viewer engaged heavily. Kathy and Skye are a great team up leading the supporting cast. Now we want to know what you think. Drop a comment and remember to vote in our poll.
