This past weekend, the international box office had a slow pace, primarily due to the lack of major releases outside of China. Yet, this quiet time brought a chance to highlight recent milestones from existing films. With the Lunar New Year titles stepping into the spotlight, several movies achieved impressive benchmarks that captivated audiences worldwide.

Disney's Moana 2 has made history by surpassing Finding Dory and Despicable Me 3, now ranking as the No. 9 animated release globally. The film has earned an astounding $1.037 billion, enchanting viewers as it nears the end of its theatrical run. This remarkable achievement is significant in the animated film category, further cementing Disney's dominance in creating beloved animated experiences. For instance, its vibrant visuals and rich storytelling have helped Moana 2 resonate with a diverse audience.

Additionally, Disney's Mufasa: The Lion King continues to showcase box office strength, crossing the $650 million threshold worldwide. In its seventh weekend, it added $11.7 million internationally, with only a minor 29% drop from the previous weekend. The film now boasts an overseas total of $423.5 million. Notably, the top markets include France, leading with $39.5 million, and the UK at $36.6 million. Germany, Mexico, and Italy follow closely behind with earnings of $29.3 million, $29.1 million, and $23.4 million, respectively. This varied distribution emphasizes the Lion King franchise's broad appeal across different cultures.

In a delightful twist, Studiocanal's Paddington in Peru is winning hearts globally with its engaging storyline. Before its domestic release, the film has already garnered $8.7 million from 51 international markets, significantly supported by Sony. The film’s offshore total is approaching $100 million, currently sitting at $93.2 million. As the charming bear prepares for his North American debut on Valentine's Day, expectations soar for its performance. Given the franchise's previous successes, Paddington in Peru is well-positioned for a strong reception.

Meanwhile, Searchlight’s A Complete Unknown has not only held the No. 1 position in the UK for three consecutive weeks but also debuted at No. 1 in France. The involvement of Timothée Chalamet has undeniably boosted its profile. With a global total of $87.4 million, the film exemplifies the power of compelling storytelling in attracting audiences.

This past weekend may not have been packed with high-profile releases at the international box office, but the successes of films like Moana 2, Mufasa: The Lion King, Paddington in Peru, and A Complete Unknown underscore a continuous evolution in the cinematic world. These milestones highlight storytelling's enduring value, demonstrating its power to resonate deeply with audiences while paving the way for future triumphs in the industry.
