In Rescue: HI-Surf Season 1, Episode 12, titled "Surge," the lifeguards face a busy day with a tsunami warning forcing everyone to evacuate the beach. For Sonny, the day becomes even more challenging as he searches for his missing daughter, Ocean.
The tsunami threat, which escalates from an advisory to a full warning, brings urgency to the episode, though it also slows the progression of key storylines, particularly the aftermath of Will and Em's breakup and Em’s decision to step back from the captain role.
Sonny begins the episode still considering retirement, despite Em's decision in Rescue: HI-Surf Episode 11 to not take the captain role. Sonny, who has struggled since Zion's death, believes it's time to step aside, but he has also made progress in getting himself to a healthier place, both personally and professionally. Despite his initial thoughts of retiring, Sonny proves he's still capable of doing the job. As the tsunami warning intensifies, the team faces the uncertainty of the situation, but Sonny remains calm and collected in the face of the potential disaster.
Meanwhile, Sonny’s daughter, Ocean, skips school and lies to her parents. She leaves her phone at home on the day of the tsunami warning, causing Sonny to worry even more. After questioning Ocean's friends, Sonny locates her and her boyfriend. Though she is reprimanded in front of her friends, Sonny’s anger is understandable, given the tense circumstances.

With the tsunami threat looming and Ocean missing, Sonny’s concern for his daughter adds to the emotional weight of the episode. It also marks a turning point for Sonny, reinforcing his role as a protector and reminding him why he’s still suited for the job.
While Sonny deals with his personal crisis, Em’s day is spent with Laka, as Will has left for Australia after his breakup with Julie. Em, unaware of Will’s departure, learns about the breakup from Laka, a situation that complicates her already challenging day. With the beach in disarray due to people not evacuating, Em and Laka handle the situation, but Em continues to wrestle with her decision to step down from the captain role. She recognizes she wasn't ready to take on the responsibility, and her decision to back out prevents potential disruption to the team’s dynamics.
As the episode progresses, the focus shifts to the ongoing tension between Kainalu and Hina. After Kainalu impresses Hina with his actions during a critical rescue, she gives her approval for Rosie to pursue a relationship with him. Kainalu, who has grown significantly since his early days on the job, continues to develop into a compassionate and skilled lifeguard. The dynamic between Kainalu and Hina is marked by subtle chemistry, though Hina remains cautious about pursuing anything further due to past experiences.
The episode concludes with key shifts in the characters' paths, setting up new challenges and developments for the remainder of the season.
