In High Potential Season 1, Episode 12, titled “Partners”, the plot takes a fascinating turn with the case of Anson Pierce, a tech mogul whose sudden death on an airport tarmac leads to an investigation involving deepfakes, cyber-hacking, and a tangled web of personal vendettas. This episode not only delves into the mystery surrounding Anson’s death but also brings to the forefront the complex dynamics between Adam (Daniel Sunjata), Morgan (Kaitlin Olson), and FBI Special Agent Ronnie Oliver (Jocko Sims).

The case begins with the discovery of Anson Pierce’s body after he collapses upon exiting a private plane, foaming at the mouth, and dies shortly after. It’s determined that he was poisoned, likely with a sophisticated substance. Morgan and the team soon learn that Anson founded a controversial social media company specializing in deepfake technology, which has caused havoc in the lives of many by manipulating videos to spread misinformation and ruin reputations. This adds an interesting layer to the story as the team unravels who might have wanted to silence him and why.

What I loved about this episode was the intricate case that tied personal motivations with business and technology. The plot was suspenseful, with a number of twists that kept me on the edge of my seat. Anson’s company, a player in the realm of digital misinformation, made him plenty of enemies, and it was clear that whoever was behind his death had a deeply personal reason for wanting him gone. The investigation leads the team through complex layers of suspects, including an eccentric hacker named Simon Keating and a non-profit founder, Aria Vale, who had a heated interaction with Anson before his death.

However, the most compelling aspect of “Partners” was the personal dynamics at play, particularly between Adam and Ronnie. The tension between them was palpable, with both having a complicated history. It was revealed that they were once partners but had a falling out due to a setup that nearly ruined their careers. The fallout between them felt so genuine, and Adam's reluctance to work with Ronnie again added a layer of tension throughout the episode. The way the writers slowly unveiled their past made me appreciate the depth of their relationship. Adam and Morgan’s dynamic, though new, was also evolving in a way that felt more collaborative and trusting as they navigated the case together.

Morgan, as always, was a standout in this episode. Her sharp instincts and relentless pursuit of the truth were on full display as she worked tirelessly, sifting through evidence and piecing together a theory that eventually leads her to the real culprit. I found it interesting how she pushed Adam to confront his unresolved issues with Ronnie and the past, while also becoming more comfortable in her role as Adam’s partner. Their evolving partnership is one of the most rewarding arcs in the series, and “Partners” served as a pivotal episode in that development.

The case itself took a fascinating turn when they discovered that Kenneth Sutton, a former poison control expert, was likely involved in the poisoning. It was a personal vendetta against Anson for causing the suicide of his daughter through the spread of false information. The investigation deepens as the team learns that Kenneth was working with Anson’s security team member, Parker, to exact revenge. The revelation that the poison might have been hidden in Anson’s dog’s collar was an unexpected twist, and the final arrest of Parker was satisfying.

What I appreciated most in this episode was the blend of procedural detective work with personal stakes. While the case was

intriguing, it was the emotional beats—Adam's past with Ronnie, Morgan’s partnership with Adam, and the team’s camaraderie—that really elevated the episode. The final moments of the episode, where Ronnie apologizes to Adam for leaving him to clear up the mess, felt like a small but meaningful resolution to their fractured relationship. It was nice to see Ronnie recognize Adam’s value, and it gave me hope that their professional relationship could be repaired in future episodes.

The personal subplot involving Morgan and her family was also handled with care. The scene where Ludo, Morgan’s ex, collapses, leading Morgan to rush home, added a grounded, emotional layer to the episode. It was a reminder that, despite the high-stakes nature of the investigation, Morgan's family life is just as important, and the balance she tries to maintain between her career and her personal life continues to be a central theme of the series.

“Partners” was a well-paced, emotionally charged episode of High Potential. It delivered a solid, engaging mystery with high stakes, but what really stood out was the continued evolution of the characters and their relationships. The dynamic between Adam, Morgan, and Ronnie was explored in depth, and the case itself tied beautifully into the personal motivations of the characters. The episode’s ending left me eagerly anticipating how Adam and Morgan's partnership will grow, and I’m excited to see where the show goes next.
