“High Ground” is an intense episode that takes the action outside the usual urban backdrop of S.W.A.T., into the rugged terrain of the wilderness. The episode centers around Officers Zoe Powell and Devin Gamble, who find themselves on a hiking trip that unexpectedly turns into a deadly game of survival. This detour from the usual city-based operations gives the episode a refreshing twist but also presents some challenges in terms of realism and pacing.
The episode begins with Powell and Gamble, still reeling from Gamble’s suspension, attempting to find some peace during their hiking trip. However, their quiet getaway takes a sharp turn when they stumble upon an illegal marijuana cultivation site and a pregnant woman in distress. In trying to help, the officers become embroiled in a violent encounter with a dangerous cartel, whose operations span drug trafficking and human trafficking.
The tension builds as Powell and Gamble, without their usual weapons or backup, must navigate through a life-threatening situation. The stakes are high, and the physical and emotional toll on the characters is evident. This plotline touches on themes of duty, loyalty, and sacrifice, showing how even in the most dire circumstances, the instinct to protect and serve never fades.
One of the episode's strongest points is its ability to create suspense in an unconventional setting. The lack of backup and resources makes for a nerve-wracking dynamic. Both Powell and Gamble are forced to rely on their wits, skill, and each other as they face down the cartel. The decision to place the characters in this isolated scenario was a good move to break away from the usual formula and inject a sense of vulnerability into these seasoned officers.
Additionally, the performances from the cast, particularly the chemistry between Powell and Gamble, shine through. The emotional weight they carry is palpable, especially when they realize just how deep the danger runs. It’s refreshing to see these characters outside of their usual roles, forced to navigate personal and professional boundaries in such a high-stakes environment.
While the episode’s premise is intriguing, there are some aspects that stretch credibility. For one, it’s hard to imagine two officers, especially under suspension, acting so independently in such a dangerous situation. Their decision to engage with the cartel and the level of risk they take without backup or proper resources feels a bit far-fetched. In a real-life scenario, the stakes would likely be too high for officers to go in without any support, making their actions seem more like plot devices than logical decisions.
Another drawback is the pacing. At times, the episode feels a bit uneven, with certain moments dragging on while others feel
rushed. The tension between the officers and the cartel could have been built up more, especially when it comes to the pregnant woman’s storyline. Her situation is serious, but the emotional payoff feels rushed due to the rapid progression of the plot.

As a fan of the show, I appreciate S.W.A.T.’s willingness to take risks and step outside its usual formula, but “High Ground” feels like it may have gone a little too far. The rugged wilderness setting is a nice change of pace, but the episode’s unrealistic elements, particularly the officers acting without backup or equipment, take away from the potential suspense. I do think the dynamic between Powell and Gamble was strong, and the episode did a good job of showcasing their bond, but I found myself wishing for a more grounded and believable plot.
Overall, "High Ground" is a thrilling, if flawed, episode that tries to offer something different for the series. It has its moments of intensity and character development, but the stretched realism and occasionally uneven pacing prevent it from being one of the stronger episodes in the series. That said, it’s still an enjoyable watch for fans who appreciate the show’s commitment to action and character-driven storytelling.

Also they are in LA where cannabis is legal. It's very very unlikely that there are still illegal grows to that extent. I absolutely hate this episode and makes want to stop watching the series all together! Portraying cannabis in a negative way doesn't sit well with me.
This episode totally jumped the shark. Very disappointing. So many stupid decisions along the way just to create some drama.
