Seal Team: Chaos in the Calm Parts 1 & 2 Review: An Action Packed Opener

Bravo team is back for their final mission this season. With last season ending with the death of a beloved team member, Bravo is surely feeling their loss. Not to mention having to deal with Command sidelining them for fighting for better health for veterans and soldiers.

Episode 1 gives us a glimpse into how each team member is handling shore leave. While some thrive, others are stuck with the dogs - literally. The fallout continues with tensions running high between Command and Bravo with petty pranks being pulled. At least Ray continues to be the voice of reason and has some sense. His work at Spencer House is really making a difference and he seems to be looking forward to retirement.

Jason appears to be adjusting well, as he gets to spend more time with his kids and girlfriend but he cannot stand by while Bravo is being punished for what he set in motion. He offers to give up his trident if Bravo is back in action. For a second it seemed that Command would agree as Bravo is called in but the mission - training Swedish soldiers for a month. The team did not have too much time to scoff because they were introduced to their new team member Drew Franklin.

Drew of course isn’t a team player, has a bad reputation and is rough around the edges. It’s clear we will be treated to the classic bad guy turned bestie trope. While Part 1 was a little slower - setting up the storyline for the final season, Part 2 was full of action and my favorite episode of the two parter.

While the team is taking an authorized trip outside of base, they end up right smack in the middle of a terrorist attack involving active shooters at a mall. The sequences were intense and left me on the edge of my seat. As civilians, they had to use their training with no guns to take out the shooters one by one. They couldn’t have done it without Pepper the dog who was the real hero.

Jason split up the team and had Drew go with him which was an obvious setup to Drew saving him after he took out one shooter with his pocket knife in a beautiful choreographed fight. A fight that should’ve been lightwork for Jason was a struggle. He obviously won but another shooter got the drop on him and Drew was able to shoot him from a great distance with just a pistol. He is an urban legend for a reason. Jason started suffering from PTSD which gave the episode some emotional leverage along with Omar who unfortunately could not save a mother but was able to save her daughter.

The scene with the team having  to stop a suicide bomber from attacking their makeshift triage area was so good with high level intensity. Once the Bravo team got back, the drama did not stop there. Jason began having nightmares and Sonny went to Ben’s court hearing, advocating on Clay’s behalf and asking for Ben to be given a second chance as it is what Clay would have wanted.

Meanwhile, Lisa struggled with her new position during both episodes but in the end found her power. We were introduced to Drew’s family situation offering more backstory into his mysterious past. Overall a strong season opener for the veteran military show. The writing has definitely left me wanting to see where they go for the remainder of the season.
