Sex Lives of College Girls hits its stride with another strong episode in Season 3. Episode 3 introduces the girls’ new roommate, Kacey, whose overconfidence and subtle shade quickly make her a divisive character. Kacey is all about her boyfriend, Calvin, constantly rubbing their relationship in the girls' faces, adding a layer of tension to the dynamics. Meanwhile, Kimberly heads off to study with Eli, but their session quickly turns into a makeout session. When Kimberly asks about Eli’s ex, Eli shares the details, and Kimberly jokes that they have the same taste in men.
Bela meets with Taylor after an AA meeting. They run into Arvind, and Bela can’t help but blush and flirt, which Taylor immediately calls out. Pushing her to ask Arvind out, Bela finally musters the courage to invite him to lunch, which he happily agrees to.
Whitney, excelling academically, receives praise from her professor for her outstanding African American Studies paper, and the professor even encourages her to minor in the subject. However, Whitney offends her professor by dismissing African American Studies as less important than STEM, as there is more money in STEM. When Whitney is replaced as Center for one of her soccer games, it becomes a turning point for Whitney. She is expected to juggle it all, and she comes to understand how STEM intersects with African American history, thanks to her professor’s guidance.
The girls continue their journey through complicated relationships. In the dining hall, Kacey introduces Calvin while getting digs in on the girls, who are all single. Kimberly quickly realizes she has seen Calvin cheating on her. The dilemma arises—should they tell Kacey or not? The group decides not to, showcasing their bond and the complexity of supporting one another.
Kimberly feels insecure about Eli’s past and tries too hard to please him, leading to her trying to surprise him in bed with something she picked up at a sex shop. He is horrified and tells her that isn't something he needs or wants from her.
Meanwhile, Bela’s fascination with Arvind continues, only to be deflated when she discovers he has a girlfriend. At a party, the girls catch Calvin cheating on Kacey, the girls debate once more on what to do. They decided to tell her, but Kimberly already has. Kacey confronts him and later apologizes for her earlier behavior, and the girls remind her that they’ve got each other’s backs.
Episode 3 remains solid, with its awkward humor continuing to resonate. Despite some fans feeling the absence of Leighton (Renee Rapp), the episode solidifies its footing and keeps the ensemble dynamic engaging.
Episode 4: Franklin The Fox
In Episode 4, Bela anxiously pours over a DM she sent to Arvind in an attemp of reverse psychology to get him to break up with his girlfriend, but her penchant for dysfunctional relationships means she can’t let go of him because he’s taken. It drives her to him more. Eventually, she undoes the message, a small but significant step for her character.
Whitney ends up in bed with Isiah, a seemingly random event that leaves some fans feeling cheated, as we haven't seen their relationship develop since their last interaction. Both she and Kimberly return from what’s essentially a "walk of shame," leading to a conversation with Bela. Kacey, ever the judgmental presence, criticizes the girls for talking about their sex lives with guys who don’t want relationships, despite her own involvement in dating apps. Kacey’s role as the overconfident, snobby new roommate feels forced, as her attitude lacks the complexity of Leighton’s character, though her interactions with the others provide some tension.
While Bela gets caught in a monotonous task of guarding a rock with Arvind and his girlfriend, she meets the school mascot, and sparks fly, despite never seeing his face. In a surprising turn, Bela ends up having sex with the mascot, though her mind continues to linger on Arvind. Meanwhile, Kacey, who is auditioning for a role, gets cast in a small part, much to her dismay. Her overconfidence is met with an honest critique from her professor, who tells her that she’s talented but lacks substance. Kacey is determined to prove the professor wrong.
Later at a party, Kimberly accidentally drinks Molly water, which sends her into a spiral. Eli tries to help, but she loses him in the crowd. Laila picks her up, and an unexpected crime unfolds, adding a darker twist to the episode.
Whitney struggles with balancing her sports and academic life while trying to squeeze in a no-strings-attached hookup with Isiah. Encouraged by Isiah, she starts to consider her anxiety and visits mental health services, though she ultimately hesitates. Meanwhile, Arvind catches up with Bela, who tries to avoid him to protect her feelings. However, Arvind tells her he has broken up with his girlfriend.
Episode 4 is another solid entry, though Kacey’s character remains one-dimensional compared to her predecessor. Despite this, the episode’s humor, and bond between the girls and the challenges they face as they continue exploring life and finding themselves keep things interesting. The complexities of balancing friendships, romantic interests, and personal goals remain central to the show, making Sex Lives of College Girls a standout comedy that’s both funny and relatable.
