Shanica Knowles returns to Lifetime with Girl in the Garage: The Laura Cowan Story, marking her fifth film for the network. Premiering on January 18th, 2025, the film is based on a true story and follows the harrowing journey of Laura Cowan, a woman who finds herself trapped in a nightmare after seeking help from a family friend.


The story begins when Laura’s husband is arrested, and a family friend named Musa (played by Stephen Bishop) offers to take her and her children in temporarily. What initially feels like a gesture of kindness quickly spirals into a terrifying situation. Musa subjects Laura and her children to severe mental and physical abuse, locking them in a garage and tormenting them in unimaginable ways. As Laura holds on to her faith and strength, she manages to document her ordeal and eventually sends a note to the outside world, leading to her rescue.





Shanica Knowles stars alongside Paige Hurd, Stephen Bishop, and Brad James in this intense thriller. The film is produced by Poke Prod for Lifetime, with Sean Dwyer and Elizabeth Cullen serving as executive producers. Directed by Manu Boyer and written by Avery O. Williams, Girl in the Garage promises to captivate audiences with its gripping portrayal of survival and resilience.


Known for her iconic role as Amber Addison on Disney Channel's Hannah Montana, Shanica has a long history with Lifetime, having previously starred in films like Megachurch Murder, Surviving Compton: Dre, Suge & Michelle ‘le’, Babysitters Nightmare, and Christmas on the Menu. She also appeared in the rom-com Time Capsule and made a memorable stint on The Young and the Restlessin 2018.


Beyond acting, Shanica has a passion for music. She first gained national recognition at just 11 years old, when she won 1st place on It’s Showtime at the Apollo. Now, as a rising country singer, Shanica is excited to bring her musical talents to the small screen with her own dramatic/music series, where she will explore the challenges of breaking into the music industry.
