This week’s recognition goes to Naomi Matsuda for her outstanding portrayal of Dr. Li Nozawa Finnegan on The Bold and the Beautiful. From the moment Li was introduced, she embodied the role of a devoted wife, accomplished doctor, and loving mother to Dr. John “Finn” Finnegan. However, Li’s life took a dramatic turn when she discovered that her husband, Jack, was not only Finn’s biological father but had also been unfaithful with the notorious Sheila Carter. Also lets not forget Shelia also tried to kill her and shot her son and his wife, my personality would shift too.
This revelation marked a transformation in Li’s character, evolving her into a bold and uncompromising woman who no longer tolerated deceit. Her willingness to confront others—whether Sheila, her son, or even her own husband—earned her both admiration and criticism. Some might label her as bitter, but her strength and refusal to endure mistreatment showcased a woman reclaiming her power.
In recent episodes, the introduction of Li’s free-spirited sister, Penelope (Poppy), added more complexity to her story. Li’s resentment toward Poppy stemmed from their vastly different lifestyles and long-held suspicions, including the belief that Poppy and Jack had an affair that produced Poppy’s daughter, Luna. This week, viewers finally witnessed a long-overdue confrontation where Li demanded the truth, forcing Jack to submit to a DNA test.
Naomi’s performance was nothing short of remarkable. She masterfully conveyed Li’s anger, exhaustion, and vulnerability as her character confronted years of betrayal and suspicion. A particularly standout moment was when Li, in her frustration, jabbed Jack with a needle to ensure the DNA test was completed—a rare blend of humor and intensity.
The results, however, revealed an unexpected twist: Jack was not Luna’s father. This revelation shattered Li’s assumptions and led to a poignant moment of reconciliation with her sister. Naomi beautifully depicted Li’s transition from rage to remorse, showcasing her character’s softer side and hinting at the return of the compassionate woman we first met.
Naomi Matsuda deserves immense praise for bringing depth, authenticity, and raw emotion to Li’s journey. Her ability to navigate the complexities of this storyline has cemented her as a standout in the Finnegan family dynamic.
On a side note, while the possibility of Finn being romantically linked to his aunt Poppy is unsettling and, in my opinion, crosses ethical boundaries, Naomi’s performance elevated the material and kept viewers invested. I still feel it would wrong to go that route regarding Finn. Regardless of the storyline’s direction, Naomi continues to shine, and I hope we see more of her in future arcs. A potential romance with Bill Spencer, creating a triangle with Jack, would be intriguing—but for now, we celebrate Naomi’s stellar work this week. Bravo!
