‘Star Trek’ Live-Action Comedy Series in Development From Tawny Newsome and Justin Simien
Tawny Newsome and Justin Simien are teaming up for a fresh and comedic take on the "Star Trek" universe. Their new live-action series is set in the 25th century and will follow the humorous adventures of Federation outsiders working at a luxurious resort planet. The twist? Their escapades are broadcast across the entire quadrant, adding a meta layer to the comedy.
Newsome, known for her role as Beckett Mariner on "Star Trek: Lower Decks," and Simien, who has a background in sharp, socially-aware comedy and horror, will be deeply involved in both writing and producing the series. The project was announced at San Diego Comic-Con, with Newsome attending alongside the "Lower Decks" cast, while Simien also took part in moderating the panel.
In addition to Newsome’s role as a writer for the upcoming "Starfleet Academy" series and her live-action appearance as Mariner in "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," this new series represents an exciting blend of her acting and writing talents. Simien's involvement follows his success with "Dear White People," as well as his work on the horror comedies "Bad Hair" and "Haunted Mansion."
This new series, with Simien and Newsome at the helm, promises to bring a unique comedic twist to the "Star Trek" franchise, blending humor with the rich sci-fi tapestry that fans have come to love.
