Star Trek Lower Decks Bids Farwell in Final Season: Review

The fifth and final season of Star Trek: Lower Decks is entertaining, warping on its farewell journey in a conclusion that reflects the current state of the Star Trek franchise. Joining Star Trek: Discovery, Strange New Worlds, Prodigy, and Picard, this animated series delivered each season. While anticipating the Michelle Yeoh-led Star Trek: Section 31 film and eagerly awaiting a new chapter of Star Trek 4 starring Chris Pine, the loss of this show leaves a gap.

The voice talents of Tawny Newsome, Jack Quaid, Noël Wells, Eugene Cordero, Dawnn Lewis, Jerry O'Connell, Fred Tatasciore, and Gillian Vigman shine as usual in this final season. Showrunner Mike McMahan, gives the show a fitting final bow, showcasing the remarkable progress the show has made and delivering some of its most memorable moments yet.

The enduring appeal of the show lies in its portrayal of the crazy crew, a theme that continues in this season as our beloved characters show great character growth. Fans have always connected with the eccentric USS Cerritos crew, who consistently bring joy and humor to the challenges of Starfleet life.

Season 5 offers a delightful mix of everything that Star Trek enthusiasts cherish, featuring ridiculous scenarios and clever narratives. The character dynamics, particularly between Lt. Mariner (Newsome) and Lt. Boimler (Quaid), highlight their development and acceptance of their place in Starfleet, flaws and all. Lt. Tendi (Wells) takes center stage this season, embarking on a journey to Orion and embracing her role as the Mistress of the Winter Constellations.

The season also revisits the Klingons! Who doesn't love them? Will Boimler finally get what he wants? All addressed this season.

Mariner continues to shine, blending sharp wit with poignant moments. Her colorful language—often censored—serves as a reminder of her unapologetic nature. The development of characters like T'Lyn (Ruiz), known for embodying Vulcan logic, highlights the series' dedication to character evolution.

Overall, Season 5 of Star Trek: Lower Decks concludes triumphantly, celebrating the progression of its characters while delivering the humor and heart that fans adore. As we bid farewell to the Cerritos crew, we remain optimistic about the future of the Star Trek universe, eagerly anticipating the new adventures that lie ahead.
