The Couple Next Door Episode 5, The Ultimatum, is a thrilling installment that cranks up the drama and leaves viewers on the edge of their seats. The episode’s biggest revelation, and the one that will likely have lasting consequences, is Evie’s pregnancy. This news marks a turning point in her increasingly unstable mental state. Obsessed with Danny, she goes to great lengths to seduce him, and unfortunately, Danny’s poor decision-making continues. He's easily swayed, despite his lingering love for his wife, Becka (Jessica De Gouw).
After their brief, passionate encounter, Danny tells Evie that he loves Becka. But let’s be honest—his actions clearly contradict his words. The fact that he couldn’t resist Evie shows how weak he is in this situation. Evie’s bombshell—revealing she’s pregnant with Danny’s child—wasn’t exactly a surprise, but the weight of it is undeniable. It adds a whole new layer of complexity to an already messy situation. For the record, I never thought for a second that Pete (Alfred Enoch) was the father, but it still stings for Danny, who already has another son with Lena—a fact Becka is now fully aware of after following him in Episode 4.
Evie’s attitude has shifted dramatically, and her chilling line, “it’s not you and Becka anymore, guess I’ll see you soon then,” really hits home. She’s no longer the fragile character we once saw—she's become someone who’s determined to drive a wedge between Danny and Becka, and there’s an unsettling finality to her tone. It’s clear that she’s spiraling and doesn’t care who gets hurt in the process.
Meanwhile, Pete's personal turmoil deepens when he learns from the doctor that he has no viable sperm, confirming that Evie’s claim about the baby being his was a lie. This only adds fuel to his already complicated feelings. The dinner scene between Pete and Evie is intense, as he gives her an ultimatum: either abort the baby or their relationship is over. It’s harsh, but given Evie’s current state, it’s clear that Pete is struggling to control his anger and frustration. It’s a messy situation for everyone involved.
The episode also progresses other storylines, as Danny and Becka discover that Alan (Hugh Dennis) is behind the revenge website. Meanwhile, Pete and Danny’s tense encounter with Robby Spencer leads to a cliffhanger, where Danny asks Pete about his gun. Pete lies and says he doesn’t have it, but it's clear he does. You can feel the gears turning in Pete’s mind, setting up what will likely be a tense and action-packed finale.
The episode does a fantastic job of setting up the finale for next week. The revelations in The Ultimatum have raised the stakes, but there’s still a lot to wrap up. We can’t forget about the very first scene from Episode 1, where the foursome is in the woods, and Pete seems to be running after Evie—could that moment be related to the gun?
Overall, Episode 5 of The Couple Next Door is a marked improvement from the earlier episodes. It keeps the tension high, delivers some shocking moments, and sets the stage for an intense finale. With so many unresolved issues and questions left hanging, I’m eager to see how it all wraps up in next week’s finale.
