'The Irrational' Season 2 Episode 13 "Murder She Rode" Review

Writer's picture: ZakiyyahZakiyyah

The episode unfolds at Cross Creek Stables, where a tragic accident leads to a deeper investigation into the death of Kathleen Cross, a legendary equestrian. Initially believed to be the result of an unruly horse, Zeus, Kathleen’s fatal fall soon raises suspicions. Seb, the stable hand who has cared for Zeus for years, refuses to believe the horse is responsible. Desperate to prove Zeus’s innocence, he seeks help from Alec Mercer, a behavioral scientist, who begins unraveling the truth behind Kathleen’s death.

As Alec and his team dig deeper, they discover that Zeus’s behavior had been manipulated using a high-frequency sound device embedded in his bridle. The device, imperceptible to human ears, triggered an extreme fear response, causing Zeus to panic uncontrollably. The investigation takes a sharp turn when they realize that Kathleen had not even been scheduled to ride that day Seb was supposed to take Zeus out. This revelation suggests that Kathleen may not have been the intended target, but rather collateral damage in a larger scheme.

Meanwhile, the case intertwines with an ongoing legal battle involving Alec’s colleague, Marissa, who is forced to confront the ethics of a past FBI investigation. A key case, centered around a search warrant that led to firearm charges against a man with a criminal record, comes under scrutiny. Facing mounting pressure, Marissa acknowledges the legal gray area surrounding the warrant and ultimately supports dropping the charges. This moment of professional reckoning also brings her closer to Cam, a lawyer she recently discovered is her biological son. Their relationship, strained by years of separation, begins to mend as they find common ground in their pursuit of truth and justice.

Back at the ranch, Alec and his team continue to follow the money. They uncover a financial motive tied to Zeus’s stud fees, revealing that Kathleen’s brother, Pete Cross, had been financially desperate. When Zeus’s reproductive viability came into question due to manipulated fertility tests, it created an artificial scarcity that significantly inflated the value of viable samples. Kathleen had unknowingly disrupted this scheme by delaying Zeus’s breeding business, which put her in direct conflict with those profiting from the deception.

As the pieces fall into place, Pete is caught sneaking into the barn, syringe in hand, attempting to finish what he started. Confronted with the evidence, he confesses to orchestrating Zeus’s demise for financial gain. Though he insists Kathleen’s death was unintentional, his desperation to secure his future ultimately led to his downfall. In trying to win everything, he lost it all.

With Pete arrested and Zeus officially cleared of wrongdoing, Seb is offered the opportunity to continue caring for the horse he loves. In a moment of personal reflection, Phoebe, who had long distanced herself from riding following the death of her mother, acknowledges that in her attempt to protect herself from grief, she also robbed herself of the joy that came with it. Encouraged by Alec, she decides it may be time to return to the saddle.

The episode closes with a sense of resolution not only for Zeus and Seb but also for Alec, Marissa, and Phoebe. Justice is served, relationships are tested and strengthened, and the idea that embracing both joy and sorrow is part of the human experience lingers as the final thought.
