The Irrational Season 2 Episode 2: "A Kick in the Teeth" Review

The second episode starts with a woman working out on a treadmill. The doorbell rings, she checks the security cameras. She goes to answer the door and asks the construction worker if he needs access to the back of her house again? Just then she is shit four times. Then the construction worker comes up to the young woman and stomps on her face. This seems really personal.

It looks like Alec is catching up with Izzy from season one, a burn patient that Alec befriended in the hospital. She lets Alec know about a burn treatment that she is considering and she wants to know if he might be interested too. Alec kind of dismisses her.

Back on campus Rizwan lets Alec know that he thinks that he may have found a good person to add to the team. They still haven’t replaced Phoebe. Alec points out that he seems very nervous. It seems that the candidate is from a wealthy family and he did go through if they should hire him because he is a Wilton or should they not higher him because he is a Wilton. Alec asks did this have any basis on his decision. Alec feels if he thinks he is a right choice then he deserves the right to prove it. Alec and Rizwan gives him a one week chance to prove himself. Right then Alec’s phone rings. He allows Simon Wilton to answer since they are trying him out. Simon does well, but Alec takes the phone when he asks for Marissa to spell her name.

Marissa and Alec are now on the scene of the shooting earlier. Marissa points out it was Serena Barton grin channel four news. This is why all of the news stations are on the scene. She was the eleven o'clock anchor. Marissa says it looks like a robbery gone wrong, but there have been two similar robberies just in different states last week.  Alec questions if she thinks it’s a serial killer. Marissa says to Alec they need the help because her boss has not been replaced yet. Marissa talks to a member of her team that has Eric Dent, the security of the neighborhood there. Security says there was a panic button hit because they heard gunshots. When they canvassed the area they did not see anything wrong  but the front door to this house was ajar. When he checked it out he found the body. Eric gave access to the doorbell camera and it’s being anyone. Marissa drives the point home that a knock knock robbery is to make sure no one is home, but in these cases they are making sure someone is home and they are not taking anything of significance value. Marissa says each case has their veneers smashed in and this is why she thinks it’s a serial killer. Alec says it’s missing one aspect of a serial killer. They target people they think will not be missed because they want to keep killing. By targeting Serena she was high profile. Next we see it’s dark and a construction worker is approaching a house. He rings the doorbell and the man that answers asks if everything is okay. He is then shot four times and his teeth are smashed in. This seems very personal.

Now at the new murder scene the reporters are swarming and the team looks to Marissa. They ask who is gonna talk to the reporters. She says that she will do it and takes the questions that they have. They want to know are we dealing with a serial killer. Marissa let’s them know these cases seem related, but they are not sure about a serial killer. The reporters seem worried and ask she they take precautions. Marissa takes charge and lets them know this is her community too and she is doing her best to resolve this case and bring them to justice

We are in a meditation class and Phoebe is a part of the class. After the class Phoebe approaches Professor Myers after the class. Phoebe wants to ask for more responsibility and there is more she can do. It’s clear she isn’t being used like Alec used her. The professor says to take baby steps and she will let her know when she is needed. Ava, another student approaches Phoebe and says she heard her talking to the professor and she knows the professor doesn’t really like collaboration, but asked Phoebe if she could review and give feedback on a paper that she is writing. The interaction is brief, but Phoebe agrees.

Back at the FBI offices we have Kylie, Marissa, and Alec talking about the case. Marissa leaves to check in with Detective Brown. Alec gets a text from Izzy. Kylie notices his demeanor and asks what’s up. Alec talked about the scar revision procedure and she sent him articles about it. Kylie asks if he is interested. Alec makes excuse after excuse. Finally Kylie says are you telling these things to Izzy or yourself. Marissa bursts in and says they think they have the killer.

Detective Brown says his name is Carlos Perez he works for the city and was in Serena Perez’s neighborhood and seems to have an issue with the rich. Marissa says this is fine, but what physical evidence is there? Brown says they are still digging. Marissa points out he hasn’t committed a crime in ten years. Brown says he has an eyewitness. Marissa goes to speak to Carlos. Alec conducts an experiment back at the University. Marissa interrogates Perez; he says he did those things when he was an addict, and he is clean now. They mention his social media posts. He says it was over a year ago and doesn’t use that account. Perez says he is not happy about his past; he did bad things, but he did not kill these people. Perez says he was across town when her murder took place.

At the University an experiment is taking place. The experiment is on what we see and can our eyes play tricks on us. When the class takes the test on what the saw happened they all seem confident. The class says they are mainly confident with their answers. Alec plays back the hidden video so they know the answers and can see what happened. When we get the actual percentage of how many were correct it’s crazy because only fifteen percent of about three students got everything correct. Alec points out that under stress that people can get things wrong and will still swear they are right and quick to judge others. Someone saying that they are one hundred percent sure only proves that they are overconfident. These results are compiled and given to Detective Brown saying we need to be sure of him as a suspect. Marissa tells him they don’t have enough evidence to convict Carlos. Brown says that they have physical evidence now and proceeds to show them pictures of Carlos in Serena Barton’s neighborhood when he said he wasn’t in the neighborhood. Brown tells Alec that people make mistakes, but cameras don’t.

Marissa is back in interrogation with Carlos this time Alec is in the background. She asks him again if he was in the neighborhood and he denies it. Marissa says she knows he is lying and at this point he could be tried and convicted of four murders. Carlos admits he lied because he was seeing a married woman and her husband is a cop. He says he lied because he didn’t want the cop to come after him. He proceeds to tell Marissa about his on again off again with Bree Garland. Carlos says she kept telling him it wasn’t a real marriage and it was a matter of time. Carlos says then she breaks it off, but weeks later will call him back and they start up again. They hooked up the day of the murder, but she called it off again. Alec chimes in and says that’s called limerence. It is when people think they are in love and it can become obsessive, but when the feeling goes away so do they. Marissa asks to contact Bree. Carlos is nervous because he doesn’t want to go back to prison. Alec asks how can find her. Alec is now at a bar speaking to a woman who is flirting. She mentions that she is leaving her husband. Alec says it seems like you have said this before. Alec drops Carlos’s name. Immediately Bree seems irritated by the mention of his name. Bree says if she alibis him her husband will kill her. Alec says she can sign an affidavit in private. She says she will think about it. Alec implores her to do the right thing. He tells her no action is still an action and she could be setting up Carlos to take the rap for four murders he didn’t commit. On top of that the real murderer will continue to kill.

We now see a young man leaving a diner on the phone with his mom. He is shot four times and his face is stomped. Alec arrives on the scene with Simon. Alec tells Simon he didn’t have to come to the scene. Marissa gives Alec a rundown at the previous murder scenes. Simon goes on an intellectual rant about serial killers and then excuses himself to go vomit on the side. Alec says a serial killer doesn't change his MO, but this just doesn’t feel like a serial killer. Alec feels that each person is targeted specifically. Alec says we have to figure out what they all have in common.

Ava stops by Phoebe’s to go over the paper. Phoebe gives feedback and says it’s a really good paper with just some minor adjustments. Ava says she has been writing the paper for the last year. Phoebe says she thinks it should be a different name. They brainstorm and come up with a great name. The Glass Slipper. Ava says it out loud and says she really likes it.

At Alec’s place Kylie comes over with dinner. He is trying to find a pattern with the murder by looking over pictures of the murder victims. Kylie mentions the scar revision surgery and says she did some research and everything seems legit. Alec says that Izzy is hopeful. Kyle tells him I am not talking about Izzy and that she is talking about him. Kylie tries to appeal to Alec with a childhood story of bravery. Alec is hip to her and says it won’t work. They start to eat and find cilantro all over their food. Both are very unhappy and Alec becomes scientific saying they have a gene that makes them hate cilantro. Alec stops eating and has a very determined look. Alec looks at the pictures again and says that the pattern is their genes. Alec says each victim has substantial dental work and each mouth was smashed. Kyle does a quick Google search and finds out that there is amelogenesis imperfecta it causes abnormal enamel formation and it’s hereditary. Alec says he thinks all victims are related somehow.

Alec is on the phone speaking to Simon saying he won’t be in today. Marissa is ready to say I told you so. Marissa and Alec meet at a home where Marissa says he was right. All five victims were siblings, donor siblings. The donor clinic out of DC. The home they are at is donor number thirty four sixty two. Steve Thomas an inventor of map moves that every navigation system uses today. They are greeted by Angelo Patrillo, Steve's  attorney. Steve is sick and looks to be in a coma. Angelo goes over Steve’s lifestyle and how he was a machine, working seven days a week, never taking off. His lifestyle caught up with him and he had a stroke then another one. After the strokes Angelo was contacted to be executor of Steve’s estate. The task of Angelo was to divide his estate equally amongst his biological children. Marissa says then you have access to the list of his children that the killer is using. Angelo points out he legally has no right to that list until Steve passes away. Angelo admits he doesn’t know how many children resulted from Steve’s donations, but fifty million is not a little bit of money. Marissa says that it is a motive for murder.

Back at the FBI offices Alec and Marissa talk about a tonteen it’s described like what soldiers did back in WWI. They soldiers would pool their money together the more people that died the more money there was to split amongst the so that survived. Marissa says that Steve knowingly did this with his children. Kylie points out that each death is more important than the last and adds to the pot. Marissa gets a call from the clinic stating that they have identified all the donor children.

Phoebe stops in on Rizwan and gphe seems frazzled. She asks him what’s up? Rizwan says he hired another RA, but he called in sick and this is the third day. Rizwan says he is overwhelmed. Phoebe says she can tell he marked a student’s name wrong on a paper. Rizwan admits that Professor Alec said Simon got sick at a crime scene. Rizwan says he is grading papers, checking donor samples, and checking the professor’s lecture notes for tomorrow. He says it’s a lot to do alone. Rizwan is upset with himself because he feels that he made the wrong choice in Simon. Phoebe gives Rizwan solid advice on how to cope with the stress and offers to grade the papers while he works on the case; they will work the lecture together.

Kylie and Marissa are watching back the video of the donor children. They all have an alibi for at least one of the murders. They are all upset and worried about who is going to protect them. Marissa says it took forever to get the names and that is with a warrant. How did the killer know who they were? Kylie looks perplexed and then says genetic testing. Kylie says they could have used one or all the sights to fund the information. The siblings were scattered throughout many sites, but one person pops up related to them all. No name, but the user name is Ed33. Marissa asks if you have to upload your DNA to these sites. Kylie confirms that you do. Marissa says then we just need a warrant and then we will have our suspects DNA.

Simon is back at the University with Rizwan. They talk about how they are compiling DNA from possible siblings. Simon points out why we are only going off of the donor list. Rizwan says that’s what they have found so far. Simon says what about the old fashioned way. Steve was a young man at one point. Wonder if he fathered a child the natural way. Rizwan says he will call the professor with the theory.

Phoebe is called into Professor Myers' office. The Professor says that she is working on securing a grant by offering how AI can help with the shopping experience. It seems Ava’s paper is turned over with the new total and all. The Professor tasks Phoebe with proofing the paper Ava suggesting edits. Is this why Ava says the Professor doesn’t like collaboration. Or is this the professor's paper? This is an interesting turn of events. Phoebe smiles, takes the paper and says nothing.

Detective Brown calls Marissa and Alec to one of the donor kids' homes. Brown says he saw the construction worker knock on the door. Something spooked him and he ran to his service vehicle and left. Marissa says the car looks familiar. She then recalls it was at the scene of Serena’s murder. It was the patrol officer they met. Alec chimes in with Eric Dent. Alec reaches out to Kylie and has her dig into Eric Dent. Marissa wants a picture of him smiling. Kylie finds his social media and he doesn’t smile in any pictures. When she tries his work profile there is the smile that shows he has the same tooth disorder. Alec points out he may not be a donor sibling, but he is a sibling that has a right to the money. Brown says if he spooked him he could go underground. Alec says he has come too far not to finish. Eric is invested, he wants to end this and that means one more person to kill.

They are now back at Steve’s house and Alec lets Marissa and Brown know tga5 Kylie did a deep dive into Eric. It seems Eric’s mother had a one night stand with Steve. She was a waitress that died last year of cancer. Marissa says his grief could have been what set him off on this spree. Marissa says the priority is to protect Steve and SWAT is on the way. If Eric shows up she tells Alec to not try to talk him out of anything bad to stay at the front of the house. As soon as Brown and Marissa go in Alec goes to the back and the lights go out. Marissa and Brown are clearing the house. They get to Steve’s room. The nurse held her hands up. She says the power went out and Mr. Thomas’s machines will not last an hour. Brown says they will call an ambulance he is safer at a hospital. Marissa asks why she didn’t answer the door. The nurse says she had her headphones on and Mr. Thomas doesn’t usually get visitors. Alec is in the back in the dark. He enters through the back door. Alec runs straight into Eric and tells him he is too late and the FBI is already there. Eric then points the gun to his head. Alec tells him he doesn’t want to do this. Alec tries to appeal to him through his mother. Eric says his mom would still be here if Steve would have given her the money for treatment. Eric admits he went to him and pleaded for help, but Steve said he would take care of him just like he would take care of the rest of the sibling donor kids. Eric says they were not all the same. Eric screams that he owes him. Alec points out you looked up the siblings and they were living better than him and it made him angry. Alec keeps on talking and says he knows he is resentful toward the siblings and Steve, but he was a hood son that put her life before his own. He is not only Steve’s son, but he is his mothers son. What would she want him to be? Behind we see Marissa and Brown approaching. Alec gets through to Eric when he is under arrest got the murder of his siblings.

Back at the FBI offices Kylie goes into Marissa’s office with some gossip on who is the new head of the department. Marissa guesses and Kylie says no, it’s you. Marissa looks flabbergasted. Kyle says no one deserves it more than you and Marissa just looks stunned.

At the University we see Simon go to see Alec. Simon says it’s the last day of his seven day trial. Simon comes clean about the crime scene. He admits it was a lot and isn’t sure he can do this job. Alec admits that crime scenes are a lot. If it didn’t affect him he would have thought that was strange. Simon admits he was dishonest and left Rizwan in the lurch. Alec chuckled and said you're so focused on what you did wrong instead of what you did right. Alec points out how good he was in the experiment, he brought valuable information to the crime scene and most importantly he helped track down Eric. This was only in seven days. Alec says I know you can do the job, the question is do you want to do the job? Simon says he wants to do the job very much. Alec welcomes him to the team.

Alec is back home talking to Kyle about negativity bias and admits he has been doing the same with the scar revision procedure. He admits he wasn’t even giving himself a chance and was just making excuses, feeding into his own negativity biases. Kylie admits she understands his misgivings. He has had many surgeries in the past and they were painful. Kylie says no matter what he decides she will support him no matter what. She just doesn't want him to miss out on an opportunity in life because of fear. Kyle admits he would want the same for her.

There is a knock on the door, it’s Izzy. She came over so they can weigh the pros and cons of the surgery. Kylie says this is going to be a great conversation and they all eat.

Hopefully Alec can make a good informed decision about his future. We will find out more next week!
