The Irrational Season 2 Episode 3 "Bad Blood" Review

We start the episode at a hockey practice for an all woman squad. They are intensely checking each other and smack talking along the way. There is a collision and a player goes down. The other player seems proud of the move. The only problem is the victim isn’t waking up. They call sir help then notice her lower calf is bleeding out on the ice, they seem not to be able to stop the blood. They ask Soph, what have you done?

Alec is called in on the scene by the NYC district attorney’s office. They go over the scene and try to explain what has happened during the practice. This is a personal situation between the two women. Leah in the past has broken Soph’s collarbone and ruined her Olympic dreams, not sure if this was payback but they also work together outside of the rink and Leah just got promoted over Soph. Alec argues that it’s hockey and people get hurt. Alec asks if we really think this is murder. The district attorney leans into Alec and peaks his interest by saying well that’s an irrational question and that’s why he brought him in to assess the situation. Alec questions Soph who is not really into the conversation. She complains that she is tired. Soph says people get hurt in hockey all the time, Alec points out that if you were trying to hurt her is intent. Just then Soph notices two people coming towards her. She says her firm sent over a fixer and an attorney. When Alec looks up there is Rose. Alec is taken aback by seeing Rose, they haven’t spoken since the incident. Rose greets Alec warmly and says she knows he is working for the district attorney. Alec points out to Rose he thinks it was brought in intentionally.

Kylie seems to be at a codeathon amongst her fellow hackers. Kylie is confident and trash talking with the fellow participants. The prize is one thousand dollars to the person that is first to create an airtight lock up for the data on their screen wins.

Rose and Alec are now discussing the last time they spoke and Rose admits she wasn’t at her best. She apologizes for not contacting him as soon as she returned. She says she is well after recovering and taking care of herself. Rose points out that their real reunion will have to wait, since they are on opposite sides. That’s when they both compare notes and notice that they think they were brought on to neutralize each other. Alec confronts Tom about his tactics, he admits what he does and then explains why he wants him in the case. He says that Leah is like them, hard working and always working to prove herself, while Soph is well off and privileged never has had to take accountability. Alec says she says it was an accident, but shows no remorse. Tom says he knows Soph is guilty and it’s all about the job they both work at. Alec agrees to stay on and says he will start deep diving into the case. Alec goes to the office where Leah and Soph worked. He is met with a very colorful manager Bruce that wants this all over with so Soph can get back to work. Alec asks questions about the promotion and Soph’s reaction. Bruce says they have a no snowflake policy. No one whines in his office, he said the competition between the two was healthy and made them better at their job.

Joy chimes in and says that Soph didn’t whine, but she did say she would gut Leah after the promotion. Alec asks if there is anyone else he can talk to at the firm. Joy says no, but he should talk to Leah’s boyfriend Zain. She says he is an actor and not sure why Leah was dating him. She went on to say if she felt threatened she would have told him.

Back at the codeathon Kylie is finished and the others are not happy about her victory.

At the theater Alec is taking in Zain’s rendition of Julius Caesar. Alec goes to his dressy room posing as a producer, there he runs into Rose and they both play off of each other well. They are a very good team. They give Zain many accolades and Zain thanks them, but admits he is having a bad week. He details Leah’s murder. Rose points out someone was arrested. Zain says, yes and that Soph hates Leah but continues by saying he blames Becks the medical expert for not stopping the bleeding. Alec is watching Zain the entire time and also testing him. It’s clear that Zain likes everything in order. Alec tries to appeal to Zain about grief. Zain says he thinks Becks is trying to get out of paying back the eighty five grand that she owed Leah. Rose and Alec exchange puzzled glances.

Back at the FBI offices Marissa pulls Kyle in. She tells her that there was a ransomware attack in Delaware this morning that forced an insurance company to payout a one hundred thousand dollar ransom. Kyle is interested and asks questions mainly if they think they know who hacked the system. Marissa confirms they know who did it because the digital signature was left. Marissa shows Kylie the files and Pink Potentate is shown as the hacker which they both know is Kylie’s signature. Marissa says she knows she would never do this and does she know who did do it. Kylie says she wrote it at a codeathon she was at recently and they must have stolen it. Marissa says this has affected a lot of innocent people and their personal information. Marissa says she took the case to get ahead of it. The person doing the hack is using her to be the fall guy and the only thing they can do is find the real hacker.

Alec and Rose are back at the hockey rink. Alec goes on to describe an experiment that Simon and Rizwan performed with the students for a one hundred dollar prize. There were serious board games, even go karts. Alec wanted to see people's true nature in a competitive environment. They had an outlier that did become violent. During her exit interview she kept mentioning tha5 she was cheated and it made her angry. Rose and Alec are at the rink to speak with Becks checking to see if she should be added as a suspect. As they are finishing their conversation Becks walks up to them and says she wants to talk to them. Rose approaches the conversation with Becks on the aggressive side. Becks says she wasn’t in their corporate world and she was all about Hockey. She says she works at the rink, coaches, and maintains the rink. She says she does that for three rich teams. Alec says you're happy to take their money. Becks says that they have the money why not. Rose says they know she owed Leah a lot of money because she paid the back taxes on her mothers house. Becks of course lashes out and screams you think I didn’t help Leah over money? Alec points out that whether she feels anger, fear, or guilt it will not go away until she talks about it. Becks says she has treated dozens of cuts like Leah’s, but her leg just would not stop bleeding. Becks says she just wants to know if she did something wrong. She pleads she wanted to save Leah and she tried to save her. Becks begs them to tell her what she did wrong. The pain that Becks feels for me rules her out of Being a suspect.

Kylie goes back to the cafe where the codeathon took place. She has a listening device and Marissa is telling her she will be fine, since Kylie is nervous. Marissa also pints out she is actively being framed and they need to find out by who. Kiley is welcomed in by her fellow hackers. The conversation is lively and everyone seems to be having a good time and engaged in the conversation. Kylie asks about the hack on the insurance company. Everyone is familiar with the impressive work.

They discuss the hack, Kylie says they caused a lot of people harm. One of the hackers says no more harm than insurance companies do to people and they deserved it by having a file marked passwords. Marissa says they need to dig deeper on whoever was the one talking.

Back at Rose’s hotel room she and Alec work more in the case. Alec says he spoke to Leah’s parents and they said she had no underlying condition that would cause her to bleed like that. Rose says she has checked everything and nothing that would allude to a medical condition. Rose leans back and tells Alec that he really has been kind to her throughout all of this. She appreciates how he hasn’t pressured her for answers and how he allowed her space. Alec says he knows she went through hell and he is worried about her. Rose says she just needed time on herself to really sort things out on her own. The medical examiner’s report comes in and Leah tested positive for high levels of blood thinners, but has no conditions or prescriptions for that type of medication. Rose points out that the active ingredients in blood thinners are also in rat poison that kills by making them bleed out. Alec says it looks like Leah was being poisoned.

Back at the cafe Marissa is still listening in and Kylie now has Angela cornered alone to speak to her. They discuss the hack and Angela says to leave it alone. Kylie admits that the hacker used her inscription program. Angela says well if someone is going to steal then steal from the best. Marissa says she may be the suspect. Kylie takes out the earpiece so Angela can see it. Angela becomes upset and thinks that Kylie is setting her up. Angela asks if you are working for your brother. Kylie admits that her job is with the FBI and she needs to bust who is using the code for ransom. Angela says why. Kylie says it was her codeathon and she had access and left her signature in there for people to find. Angela says it wasn’t her because she took the signature out. Angela admitted that she did take pieces of her code and incorporated it into an assignment and turned it into her work, so she had to remove her signature. Angela apologized and said she would never turn in her code to a fortune gif hundred cop and then use it for a hack. She admits she was under a lot of pressure at work. Kylie looks very upset and says to Angela that she was ripped off twice.

Rose and Alec are at the DA’s office and he informs them they are looking at Leah’s apartment, at the offices where she worked and Soph’s place for the poison. Just then Soph barges in, upset that she was interviewed by a detective and her place was searched for poison. Soph shouts she would never poison Leah and that she isn’t a monster. Tom points out she is lacking remorse. Soph says you don’t think I’m sorry? She goes on to say she and Leah didn't get along, but they were friends once. Alec says he thinks that she is human and will find out the truth. Rose tells Soph that she is handling things. She says she will go, but whoever poisoned Leah hated her way more than she did. Tom receives a forensics report. It shows there was poison in Leah’s yogurt and in Zain’s closet.

Marissa is getting on Kylie for taking out the earpiece. Marissa is happy they got Angela to cooperate, but she still didn’t like that she took the earpiece out. Marissa says there was another attack this morning and she brought in someone to help. Phoebe is in the office and says that she has been restless lately and she is hesitant to profile people. Marissa says she understands, but she does find them helpful. Phoebe says she did the research and she used hard facts. The hacker is a white male, high intelligence in his late twenties early thirties. Kylie says that describes the entire group except the women. Phoebe says because he was sloppy it is clear he is not an expert programmer and it looks like he used other people's tools, stolen or found online. Phoebe says that online gamers cheat for notoriety or fame. That could be what this person is after as well.

Phoebe talks to Marissa and asks what she should do if a person of authority above her is doing something wrong and she knows if she reports it she will be in trouble. Marissa says to Phoebe that she has gone after high profile people began she knows that. She tells Phoebe that she isn’t looking for advice, but permission. Marissa just gives her a well needed pep talk and tells her she can do anything, also to remember if she needs any help she will be there for her.

In interrogation Zain is clearly panicked and upset. Rose, Alec, and Tomwstch the video. Tom is ready to arrest Zain. Alec says he doesn’t think this is Zain. Alec goes over the photos and how the rat poison was found in the closet, it was haphazardly laying on its side, just discarded. Alec says there is no way Zain would have left that box laying there that way because Zain has OCD and it was very present when they talked to him in his dressing room. Also his closet is meticulous. There is no way Zain put that poison there that way. Ton recalls Leah calling Zain a neat freak in text messages. Rose says she would like to pin it on Zain, but she doesn’t think he did it. Rose requests text messages. To. Doesn't want Soph’s team to have them. Alec is clear the scope if the case is broader now and I’d he wants him to stay on the case then they need full transparency. The texts are revealing and very dark. They determine that Leah was being harassed at work and she also received a death threat. They can’t determine who it is just that Leah called them Squidward and they told her if she went to HR they would end her.

Rose and Alec are back at Leah’s firm talking to Joy. Joy was Leah’s mentor and she knew what was going on. She said she told Leah not to go to HR. They compel Joy to tell them who Squidward is. Look who it is, Bruce the head of the firm. He admits he asked her out if it was no biggie. Alec tries to come from the angle of being on his side. Bruce said he flirted and she got mad and wanted to report him. He admits he got angry, but HR let him off with a warning and he stayed away. Bruce showed them the proof and a little more information. It looks like he monitored employees calendars and transactions on the company card. Rose asked why this information was not turned in. Bruce admitted his attorney said it was all a gray area. Rose noticed a week leading up to her death Leah had three separate appointments with a T.W. at a bar. Alec and Rose go to the karaoke bar.

Alec suggests they ask the bartender. Rose says she has an easier way. Rose asks for the sign up sheet. There she is able to go back to the week Leah dies and finds Trevor Whitman signed in. Rose says she knows that name, he is a financial reporter at the Times, not the best person. They both determine if Leah was meeting with him in secret something was wrong.

At the cafe Kylie Is there with her hacker group saying she found the hacker. She is going on and on about him and bragging about the great job he did. We see Phoebe and Marissa in the van observing everything. Everyone seems to be all ears. Jared speaks up and says it’s not the hacker she thinks it is. The plan Phoebe thought up is working. Angela warns Jared to relax, he says he is. Kylie looks at Angela and she puts her hands up. Jared continues to talk. Jared is talking so much trying to discredit the hacker Devil Maker and prove Kylie wrong that he says the real hacker is a grand details of some of the things done in the hack, only they were not released to the public. Kylie further baits Jared, she tells him his hacker skills are basic. Jared is offended by her comments and admits that he is the hacker to the group. Everyone is speechless. Jared gets up quickly to leave and Kylie says you forgot your evidence. Jared just runs off right into the FBI.

Back at the karaoke bar Alec and Rose are with Trevor. Trevor says he was worrying about Leah because she came to him about someone embezzling from the company. They asked did she give a name? He said no, but whoever it was was high up and could have a serious blow back on her. Trevor said he asked Leah to get concrete evidence which meant she had to go through company records. Trevor said he didn’t want to think her death had anything to do with their investigation. Trevor also said whoever it was embezzling felt cheated by the company and is prepared to leave the country. Alec says going back to his experiment they conducted earlier and the violent outlyer said she felt cheated. Alec says he thinks he knows who killed Leah, now they just have to prove it.

Kylie thanks Angela for not interrupting Jared’s confession. Angela says she was scared she would get arrested for being his accomplice. Kylie says that what Jared did was wrong and he committed many crimes. Angela says that may be true, but he shouldn’t have been taken down by any of us. Angela walks away with Kylie looking very disappointed in her statement as well as her behavior.

Back at the hockey rink Alec and Rose update Soph on the turn of events. Soph says that if she didn’t cut Leah she still would have died? They confirm this and Alec lets he4 know she was still violent and reckless. Soph says she still feels guilty. Alec says because she isn’t a sociopath is why she still feels guilty. Leah confesses she didn’t want Leah to die, but she wanted to hurt her, and how does she live with that. Rose tells Soph she can’t make it up to Leah, but she can make it up to the world. We cut to the firm where Joy is working. Soph comes into Joy's office and she seems happy to see her until Rose comes in as well. Rose and Soph get to the point of telling her they know she is the embezzler in the tune of ten million dollars. Joy is quiet and Soph says she hid her tracks well only she and Leah would have found it. Rose and Soph come to Joy with a proposal. Soph’s father has agreed to pay back the firm and give her a private jet to go out of the country, also to sweeten the deal he will double the money to twenty million as long as she admits that she killed Leah and clears Soph’s name. They are willing to give her a down payment as long as she enters her account number so they can send the funds. Once Joy enters the number the DA and associates come in to arrest Joy who screams she was set up. Soph responds by saying remember I’m a terrible person. Tom asked Rose and Alec how they knew. Alec says it went back to the experiment when the outlyer said she felt cheated. Joy was upset at Bruce’s success and that she had been with the firm a lot longer. Alec says he also noticed her shelves were empty, but had dust patterns where things used to be in certain places showing things being moved because she was packing. Zain confirmed the celebratory dinner was at their apartment which gave her an opportunity to plant rat poison.

Alec seeks out Soph to ask her how she was feeling. Soph says she is happy she could help, but still feels so guilty. She admits that when Leah tried to work things out after the collarbone injury she ignored her and she regrets it now. Soph says that the DA’s office offered her a deal that she will plead guilty to, because at that moment she did try to hurt Leah, but she never wanted her to die. Alec says becoming a better person is hard work, but she is off to a great start. Soph breaks down in tears and says she is trying.

Kylie and Marissa talk about the case and how this has affected her life. Marissa tells Kylie to stop her former best friend and how joining the FBI kind of ruined the friendship. Marissa says working in law enforcement can be difficult but she will always have her to lean on. They hug it out.

Alec goes to Rose's apartment and says they need to talk and it shouldn’t be over the phone. Rose begins to talk and Alec says it’s the breakup speech. Rose says it’s the only way to protect him. Alec says surviving the bomb all those years ago he realized every day he is living is a win, so she doesn’t have to protect him and he wants to live that time that he feels passion for and he doesn’t want to lose her. She admits she doesn’t want to lose him, and if she doesn’t run now she never will. Alec says to stay, don't end it. They embrace and kiss passionately. Rose says I’m still here. Alec says good and they kiss again. We are back at the karaoke bar and Rose is singing to Alec. He is watching her in awe and in tears.

The last scene was truly beautiful and Alec has such an amazing soul, that’s what makes The Irrational a good show. It gets you to look deeper at yourself in every episode. See ya next week!
