'The Rookie' Season 7 Episode 3 "Out of Pocket" Review

The Rookie returns with another engaging episode in Season 7, and once again, John is doing what he does best—worrying. It’s something that has defined his character since day one, and it’s part of what makes him so relatable. In this episode, John is particularly anxious about Jason being out there somewhere, while his wife, Bailey, is on her way back after serving in the National Guard (which I assume is the reason for Jenna Dewan’s maternity leave). John’s overprotective instincts kick into high gear as he tries to safeguard his family. He installs an elaborate security system, but, as expected, it doesn’t work as well as he hoped. I loved how the show portrays John’s vulnerabilities and the constant balancing act of trying to protect those he loves without letting it consume him. It’s a familiar struggle, but one that still resonates.

When John’s efforts to locate Jason hit dead ends, he decides to take matters into his own hands, going rogue with his own investigation. This leads him to a dangerous suspect, but of course, in true The Rookie fashion, the suspect escapes at the final moment. It was a tense sequence, and I couldn’t help but feel both frustrated and hopeful at the same time. John is so close to a breakthrough, but at least the silver lining is that just as Bailey returns, he finally gets a lead on Jason. It leaves us with a glimmer of hope for what’s to come, and I’m eager to see where this storyline goes next.

Meanwhile, Rachel is back—and I have to say, I was looking forward to her return. Rachel, for those who don’t remember, is Lucy’s friend and Tim’s ex. After a rough time in New York, she unexpectedly shows up on Lucy’s doorstep looking for a place to crash. The timing feels a little suspicious, though. Is Rachel really just in town for a breather, or is she back to stir up some drama? I think the tension between Lucy and Tim—especially with their complicated past with Rachel—could bring some interesting dynamics to the show. I do have to admit, Rachel is super cute, and I can see why both Tim and Lucy were drawn to her in the past. But with things going so well between Lucy and Tim now, I can’t help but wonder if Rachel’s presence will create unnecessary tension or just provide some comedic relief. Either way, it’s definitely a subplot to keep an eye on.

What I loved most about this episode, though, was the focus on the rookies. This hour really belonged to them, and I think they’ve brought such a fresh energy to the show. In this episode, they’re tasked with rescuing a hostage from one of LA’s dangerous criminals. They work together well, but in doing so, they break protocol. This could have serious consequences for their careers, as they’re now walking a fine line between heroism and reckless behavior. Still, it’s hard not to root for them because they’re trying to do the right thing, even if it’s not the “by the book” way. I’m really enjoying their dynamic and how they challenge each other, while also bringing something new to the station. I think these rookies have a lot of potential for great storylines ahead.

On the other hand, I can’t help but feel frustrated with Wesley. He’s still obsessing over the detective who seems to have a crush on Angela, and it’s starting to feel a bit excessive. At this point, Wesley needs to trust his relationship with Angela. I get that he’s protective, but the constant worrying over this detective seems a bit overblown. If anything, it’s becoming more of a distraction than a storyline I’m invested in. Wesley has always been a bit of a nervous character, but I’d like to see him grow past this insecurity. Angela has proven herself to be capable and trustworthy, so Wesley needs to let go of these unfounded fears and focus on their relationship.

Speaking of friction, James continues to cause tension in the friend group. While I agree with his stance on social justice and holding the police accountable, there’s a time and place for everything. His constant push for social justice, especially in the midst of personal moments, is starting to feel out of sync with the rest of the group. Yes, these conversations are important, but James could stand to read the room a little more and recognize when to step back. I get that he’s passionate about the issues, but maybe a friendly dinner conversation for once would allow everyone to breathe a little easier. It’s clear that James is struggling with balancing his personal beliefs with his relationships, and it’ll be interesting to see how that develops in future episodes.

Overall, The Rookie continues to impress with its blend of character-driven drama and intense action. This episode struck a good balance between the rookies’ growth, John’s emotional journey, and the dynamics between the characters. While there were a few moments of unnecessary tension, they didn’t overshadow the strong plot and performances. I’m excited to see where these storylines go, especially with Jason’s case still up in the air and the rookies’ future hanging in the balance. Another solid entry that keeps me coming back for more.
